João Lobo, MD, PhD. João concluded the Master Degree in Medicine in 2013 (Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, University of Porto) and the PhD in Pathology and Molecular Genetics in October 2021 (Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, University of Porto). His PhD Thesis, entitled "Uncovering novel prognostic and predictive epigenetic biomarkers in malignant testicular germ cell tumors" (funded by FCT: SFRH/BD/132751/2017) received in addition the European Doctorate Title. It included 30 publications in international journals. He contributed to the initiation of a new line of investigation at the Cancer Biology and Epigenetics Group of IPO Porto Research Center focused on testicular germ cell tumors. He also actively participated in the EpiMarkGermCell project (funded by FCT: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-29043). João is currently a Pathologist at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (obtaining board certification in March 2024 with the highest mark in Portugal - 19.95/20). He has been involved in Biobanking activities and in Molecular Pathology and Uropathology fields, with particular attention to the better understanding of testicular germ cell tumors. He is responsible for the implementation of the liquid biopsy IVD CE M371 test at the department of pathology, offered to all testicular cancer patients. He completed a Molecular Pathology internship at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) and an Uropathology fellowship at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ), under supervision of Prof. Holger Moch, and at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, United States, under supervision of Prof. George Netto and Prof. Cristina Magi-Galluzzi. He is also a Junior Researcher at the Cancer Biology and Epigenetics Group, leading the line of investigation on testicular cancer. João is an Assistant Professor at ICBAS - University of Porto since 2024, lecturing in Pathology (Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, Master Degree in Medicine, University of Porto) and in Biopathology (Faculty of Dental Medicine, Master Degree in Dental Medicine, University of Porto). He also participates regularly as Lecturer in other university curricular units. At age 35, João authored 129 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (61 first author, 6 senior author, h-index 25) and 8 book chapters (all first author). Top impact factors were: 39.3, 24.3 and 14.4. He was author of 81 scientific communications with abstract published in peer-reviewed journals (40 as first author) and peer-reviewed 115 manuscripts. He is Topic Editor of 4 Special Issues in International Journals. João frequently participates in public outreach activities related to his research topics. He supervised 1 and co-supervised 5 Master Thesis Dissertations, and is currently supervisor of 2 PhD Theses and co-supervisor of 1 PhD Thesis. He received several awards throughout his career. Top awards related to his research on testicular germ cell tumors include: 1. ESP Academy Bursary, for top Projects by early career Pathologists, 2018; 2. Tom Voûte Young Investigator Award (2,500 Euro), for the best research project on Pediatric Oncology in the Netherlands, 2019; 3. Award Banco Carregosa / Secção Regional do Norte da Ordem dos Médicos (SRNOM), 4th Edition (2,500 Euro), 2020; 4. MSD Award for Research in Health (10,000 Euro), for the best protocol in medical sciences, 2020; 5. Award Rui Osório de Castro / Millennium BCP (15,000 Euro), for the most innovative research protocol, 2021; 6. Life Young Investigator Award (1,000 CHF) for excellence in the field of life sciences, 2021; 7. Award CUF/Mello (Honorable mention 2023). João is member of several associations related to Urology, Uropathology and Molecular Biology: ESP/SPAP, EAU/YAU Penile and Testis Cancer Group, ESUP (board member), ASPIC (board member), GUPS and MaGIC (Vice-Chair of the Young Investigator Group).
