Rui Lopes is a researcher at the Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC, NOVA-FCSH), of which he is currently Vice-Director, having previously headed the research group Culture, Identities & Power and the research line Modern Mediations: Arts, Technology & Communication. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Historical Studies of Birkbeck, University of London. He works on contemporary history, particularly on Cold War culture, transnational anticolonialism, and the international dimension of the Portuguese dictatorship and empire. He has a PhD in International History from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the same institution (both completed in 2012). Along with being the PI in the project 'Amilcar Cabral, from Political History to the Politics of Memory' (2016-19 ) and co-PI in the project 'Censorship(s): an analytical model of censorial processes' (2022-23), he has developed the FCT-funded individual projects 'The Portuguese dictatorship and colonialism in western audiovisual fiction, 1933-1974' (2016-21) and 'Visualising the Cold War: Transnational production and circulation of visual spy fiction, 1960s-80s' (2022-28). He has published one peer-reviewed monograph, three peer-reviewed book chapters, and eight peer-reviewed articles, with one more in press. He has co-edited the special dossier ‘Amílcar Cabral and the Liberation of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde: International, Transnational, and Global Dimensions’ and the edited volume 'Globalising Independence Struggles of Lusophone Africa: Anti-Colonial and Post-Colonial Politics'. He was Graduate Teaching Assistant and Teaching Fellow at the LSE, and Lecturer at Birkbeck as well as at Goldsmiths, University of London. He was managing editor for the journal Cold War History and he is currently in the editorial boards of the multilingual, peer-reviewed, open access SCOPUS journals Práticas da História: Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past (which he co-founded) and Aniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image (where he is the editor of the 'Essays' section).
