I started my research career with my master and PhD in the department of organic Chemistry at the Univ. of Santiago de Compostela under the supervision of R. Riguera and E. Fernandez-Megía. I worked in organic synthesis applied to biopolymers for drug delivery and in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). I developed the synthesis of PEG grafted chitosan with bioactive molecules at the end of the PEG for targeted drug delivery (collaboration with Maria Jose Alonso). The success of this approach is demonstrated in 12 publications (2 with more than 170 cites) where these polymers facilitated the delivery of peptides and DNA. My PhD was interdisciplinary covering also studies on aggregation and flexibility of chitosan and dendrimers: Biomacromolecules 2010, 11, 2079; PCCP 2010, 12, 6587, Mol. Pharm. 2013, 10, 3225–3231) and analytical techniques (novel NMR characterization methods: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 15164-15173; Carbohydr. Polym. 2005, 61, 155) After my PhD I obtained a Barrie de la Maza fellow and moved to Axel Müller´s group in Germany, one of most important groups engaged in the formation nanostructures based on block copolymers. There I combined this knowledge with my background in polysaccharides and I described the oxime click chemistry for the synthesis of polysaccharide diblock copolymers and the formation of nanosized interpolyelectrolyte complexes with a PEG corona or a polysaccharide corona from these copolymers (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 3781, Soft Matter 2013, 9, 4297, Pol. Chem.2013, 4, 2278). After the time in Bayreuth I received a postdoctoral contract (USC) to work at the 3bs research group (Univ.of Minho). Here I followed my independent research line preparing diblock star and brush-like copolymers of glycosaminoglycans for protein delivery and stem cell culture (J. Mat. Chem. B 2014, 2 4177, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 576, Acta Biomaterialia,2017, 63, 283, Chem. an Eur. Journal 2018, 24, 14341; Chem. Sci. 2019,10 , 2385). I am also starting a new research line in the discovery of new sulfation patterns in GAG and GAG-like polysaccharides from marine origin (Carbohydr. Polym. 2017, 157,31 and 2019, 2019, 222, 114999) in collaborations with the CSIC in Vigo and the company Pacific Biotech). In 2015 I obtained a FCT contract together with (50.000 euros) for research. I have obtained in 2018 another research project (239.000 euros) and a new contract (6 years) from FCT. In summary my research is interdisciplinary between organic chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences using and improving advanced analytical tools and always focusing in polysaccharides. My research combines basic science studies in chemistry with applied science in the field of biomedicine. I have 44 publications in scientific journals with a total of 1551 citations, 1 paper as last author, 15 papers as first author, 7 papers as corresponding author, 3 review publications and a book chapter, my h-index is 18. I have performed more than 9 years of research in institutions of Europe and obtained for this funding for my independent research from Spanish and Portuguese agencies. I have participated in 3 european projects and been founded for a Postdoctoral stay (Max Plank). I have supervised 3 master students in Germany and I am supervising 2 postodcs and 3 PhD in Portugal. I am officially supervisor of one PhD student since 2016.
