I am a parasitologist with expertise in African trypanosome infection biology and large-scale datasets. African trypanosomes are microscopic tropical parasites that infect a huge range of mammalian hosts, but that are particularly pathogenic to livestock and dogs. I am the developer of VAPPER, the first automated tool to describe and quantify Trypanosoma congolense and T. vivax antigenic diversity from big data. Currently, I head the Parasite Vascular Interactions Laboratory at the Católica Biomedical Research Centre, where we dedicate to the characterisation of T. congolense and T. vivax survival strategies in the mammalian host. Before, I was a Marie Curie post-doctoral fellow working at the Luísa Figueiredo Lab (iMM) and an EMBO fellow at the Bernabeu Lab (EMBL Barcelona). My goal is to do and lead parasitology research that integrates basic biology in real-life, natural settings to improve vector control, therapy, and surveillance strategy design and ultimately improve animal welfare and the sustainable growth of livestock. I have published 13 research articles and I have presented my work at 10+ international conferences (UK, USA, France, Brazil, Tanzania, etc) and in 3 seminars as external speaker. I have successfully obtained funding as PI or Co-PI from Horizon2020-European Commission, Official Development Assistance Fund, UK, Fundação Bial, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, and la Caixa Foundation. I participate in several outreach activities and have held institutional roles, namely as part of the Athena SWAN, the Tropical College, and Diversity and Inclusion institutional committees. Currently, I am the youth representative of the World Federation of Scientific Workers at UNESCO.
