She obtained her PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2002 (supervision: Prof. Michael Akam), and carried out her post-doctoral research first at the University of Washington (Seattle, USA; 2003-2008) and later at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus (USA), in the labs of Prof. Lynn Riddiford and Prof. Jim Truman. Christen was a Group Leader at the "Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência" (Oeiras, PT; 2010-2015), before she started as Faculty at Monash University (Melbourne, AU), where she teaches and heads a research team since 2015. As a PI, Christen has: 1) been able to secure funding for her research projects and team members (including from the Portuguese and Australian funding agencies, FCT and ARC), 2) supervised researchers at different stages of their career (including >20 BSc and MSc students, >10 PhD students, 5 post-doctoral researchers), 3) published >50 papers for a total of >2500 citations (see https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=t_E_-esAAAAJ&hl), 4) been invited to present her work in a variety of venues worldwide and contributed to the organization of different scientific congresses / symposia, 5) served in journal editorial functions (including Insect Biochem Mol Biol, J Insect Physiol, Front Evol Dev Biol, Front Cell Dev Biol, Front Endocrinol, Front Physiol) and grant evaluation panels (including ANR-FR, ARC-Au, NSF-USA, FWO-BE). Christen has also earned several awards and been actively involved in science outreach. A complete list of all these activities can be found in her CV submitted as a PDF on applications for funding.
