IVO CRISTIANO DA ROCHA MARTINS

I graduated in Microbiology in 2002 at UCP, Porto, PT (1st of 46 students), joining Serrano lab, EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany, in 2003. There I met my PhD supervisors, Frederic Rousseau & Joost Schymkowitz, Switch Lab, VIB, VUB, Brussels, BE ¿ now at VIB, Catholic University of Leuven (KUL), Leuven, BE. My PhD in Bioengineering ¿ Biophysics, funded by BIF (2004-2006) & FCT (2006-2009), led to 3 articles and a patented fibril disassembly method. The PhD defence (2009/02/23) on amyloid fibrils stability was awarded a ¿Greatest Distinction¿ grade (maximum). My post-doc (2009-2013) on dengue virus capsid protein biophysics was funded by FCT and a prestigious Marie Curie EU grant and done between Portugal and Brazil. It led to the Gulbenkian Frontiers Research Prize in 2010, given the good results: 7 articles, 3 awards to me (2 to my students), >20 media articles and a patented dengue inhibitor. In 2014 I started an independent position, working on protein-ligand interactions at iMM, Lisbon, PT. I obtained funding, supervised students and purchased equipment. This led to 3 new international collaborations, >20 top publications (>10 as senior author) and a Hans Neurath Outstanding Promise Award in 2015 (becoming a Protein Society Honorary Member). I also promoted my team, with my students giving >30 oral presentations and receiving >10 prizes themselves. In 2016, with two PhD students, I was selected for the COHiTEC Program, focused on translating lab data into business, via a technology conceived by me to beat current disease detection limits. We won the program, with a business plan centred on monetizing the technology. Then, in 2017, I co-founded DART Diagnostics, with venture capital funding (Caixa Capital). In 2018, DART Diagnostics was awarded an European H2020 SME Instruments Phase I Funding (top 2% of applications), to use DART technology for early pathogen detection (patented in February 2020, definitive paten in February 2021). In 2020/2021, I led a 488k EUR consortium of four institutions, funded by P2020, to apply DART technology for SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 early detection. Given all my experience, skills and know-how I was also invited in 2019 to teach medical biochemistry to medical doctor students at FMUL, being since then assistant professor at FMUL. I am alos currently leading an exploratory project, funded by FCT, to develop dengue inhibitors.
