Francesca Coppola completed her PhD in Biology and Ecology of Global Change in January 2022, at the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal. At the same University, she was a researcher on the FCT-funded project SLEEP - Shedding Light on Freshwater Ecosystems Under Environmental Change and Pollution until January 2023. At the same time, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, where she teaches Cellular Biology and Zoology. Currently, she is a first-level researcher for the project MicroNiche: Exploring the Endolithic Niche of Coral Symbiotic Microalgae Inside Reef Sand Grains and serves as a Professor for the module of plant biology for the degree program in the biology department at UA. Her academic journey includes a Bachelor's degree in General and Applied Biology (2013) and a Master's degree in Biological Sciences (2015), both from the University of Naples Federico II. Her PhD research (2017–2022) focused on evaluating the impacts of environmental pollutants, including metals, NPs and pharmaceutical drugs, in lagoons, estuaries, and their resident organisms. This work incorporated climate change-related factors, assessing their influence on coastal biodiversity and on the bioavailability and toxicity of pollutants, particularly for bivalves with high ecological and economic relevance. Throughout her research, she has developed a robust skill set in environmental science and ecotoxicology, applying genetic, biochemical, neurological, histological, and physiological techniques to understand the effects of metals and pharmaceuticals on marine and estuarine invertebrates. She has identified key biochemical biomarkers, which serve as early-warning indicators for environmental stress. Additionally, she was a member in the H2O Value project, where she explored innovative water remediation techniques to reduce metal(loid)s using nanotechnology. She was involved, also in the ASARISAFE project, through which she gained expertise in biomarker techniques during a three-month stay at YSFRI in Qingdao, China. She has further member to the ecological international projects (NIPOGES and BISPECIAL). Dr. Coppola has actively supervised numerous international students, assisting in laboratory settings and in various ecotoxicology projects, resulting in co-authored publications. To date, 81.3% of Dr. Coppola’s 50 publications are the product of international collaborations, with 95.8% published in Q1 journals. She has an h-index of 23, with 730 independent out of 1,487 total citations on the SCOPUS. She publications reflect a commitment to advancing research in alignment with several key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as documented on Scopus: with 34 articles relating to SDG14: Life Below Water, her work significantly supports the preservation of marine biodiversity and the mitigation of pollution impacts on aquatic life. Her research on the ecotoxicological impacts of pollutants directly supports SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation by providing critical data on contaminant bioavailability and water quality, essential for environmental risk assessments and advancing water remediation technologies. Additionally, her studies on pharmaceutical and metal toxicity contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, addressing ecosystem and food chain health, thus promoting both human and ecological well-being. Her focus on climate change impacts, as documented in 11 papers under SDG 13: Climate Action, highlights her commitment to understanding how global shifts intensify pollutant toxicity. Her contributions to SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals underscore the importance of international collaboration to address pressing environmental challenges. Through her scientific contributions, Dr. Coppola is helping to build a sustainable foundation for the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of environmental and human health on a global scale.
