Mafalda Santos completed her master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at University of Lisbon - Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in December 2022. During her master thesis (Feb 2022 - Dec 2022), Mafalda Santos performed research work in the areas of Tissue Engineering and Bioengineering, specifically developing cell-derived extracellular matrix loaded electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds, using decellularized extracellular matrix derived from periodontal ligament stem cells. The main aim of her master thesis was to develop and characterize electrospun scaffolds to mimic the structure, architecture and the composition of native periodontal tissue extracellular matrix, envisaging periodontal tissue engineering strategies. The work from her master thesis project was developed in the Stem Cell Research Group (SCERG) at the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) of Instituto Superior Técnico Campus Taguspark. Mafalda Santos was awarded research fellows on the FCT-funded projects "DentalBioMatrix - Exploiting the power of decellularized extracellular matrix to fabricate hierarchical biomimetic scaffolds to regenerate functional periodontal tissues" and "NKboost: Development of a platform for the production of CAR-modified NK cells and their extracellular vesicles" at iBB of IST from March 2023 until February 2025. Her research focused primarily on the development of functional hierarchical biomaterials that mimic native tissues and the assessment of their potential to support cell proliferation and differentiation. Mafalda Santos has published one original research article, three reviews and one proceeding paper in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. Her work was presented in international scientific conference meetings.
