Vanessa A. Mata graduated in Biology at the University of Aveiro in 2010 and finished her MSc in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution at the University of Porto in 2012. She then worked as a research technician at CIBIO-InBIO (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, University of Porto) for 2 years and won a PhD scholarship for the Doctoral Programme BioDiv from the University of Porto. In 2020 she finished her PhD with a thesis on "Advancing metabarcoding techniques for the study of trophic interactions and ecosystem services". In 2021 she started her position as a Junior Researcher under the program "Stimulus of Scientific Employment, Individual Support - 3rd Edition" (2020.02547.CEECIND) at CIBIO-InBIO. During the past 5 years, she has been a member of 6 FCT projects, 2 Horizon 2020 ERA Chair, 1 Horizon Europe, 1 Biodiversa+, and vice-leader of a COST Action working group looking at the effect of climate change on the provision of ecosystem services by bats (ClimBats: CA18107). She was also recently awarded a small research grant from the British Ecological Society to study the seasonal and reproductive status effects on the trophic interactions of European Freetailed bats. She has authored (or co-authored) 63 publications in international peer-review journals and has 1,301 citations (h-index 16). Many of these articles were published in top ecology journals like Current Biology, Molecular Ecology Resources, Molecular Ecology, and Biology Letters. She has presented her work in over 10 international conferences, and for 4 times was awarded with either best or best student presentation. She has co-supervised 13 MSc thesis and 2 BSc project dissertations, and is currently co-supervising 1 MSc and 3 PhD students. Most of her research is focused on the use of molecular tools, in particular metabarcoding, for the study of species interactions, community structure, and ecosystem services.
