Since earning his PhD from the University of Porto (2023) with the thesis titled “Development of Differential Optrodes for Highly Sensitive and Reliable Chemical Sensing”, João's research has steadily focused on advancing optical sensing technologies, particularly for environmental and industrial applications. In addition to his PhD in Chemistry, João has developed significant expertise in physics, particularly in optics, as demonstrated by his nearly 40 scientific contributions. His doctoral research laid the foundation for his career in optical sensing, where he continuously integrates physical phenomena with chemical principles. Over the years, he has contributed to multiple research collaborations and gained extensive experience designing and developing innovative sensor technologies, reflecting his solid interdisciplinary background. He participated in two major European projects, CORAL and RAS.ORGMAT, where he worked with renowned investigators on developing an optical sensor for evaluating dissolved CO2 in marine environments for aquaculture. These projects provided an excellent opportunity to collaborate with key institutions such as CIIMAR (Marine Research), Sea8 Group, and the Univ. of Pecs in Hungary, on which he spent one month collaborating with Prof. Barna Kovacs investigating colorimetric materials for gas sensing. This work addressed critical monitoring challenges and strengthened his marine and industrial optical sensing expertise. In a distinct theme, he has had the privilege of collaborating with renowned researchers, such as Prof. Alessandra Bossi from the University of Verona and Prof. Nunzio Cennamo from the University of Campania. During this time, he explored the use of light-diffusing fibers functionalized with molecularly imprinted (MIP) nanoparticles for the ultra-sensitive detection of proteins in medical applications. He was responsible for supervising the experimental work of two MSc students from the Univ. of Campania. This investigation guided him through MIP technology, resulting in an essential achievement for his PhD, elevating his expertise in modifying optical material surfaces for sensing. After finishing his PhD, he collaborated with Prof. Isabel Pastoriza-Santos (University of Vigo), which also yielded significant advancements in surface plasmon resonance polaritons for protein sensing, resulting in outstanding work in plasmonics. These collaborations reflect his strong ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and his commitment to advancing optical sensor technology across various applications. His academic formation highlights his proficiency in the chemistry-optics interface, leveraging his capability in optical sensing. He has recently taken on a leadership role in the European project INNOAQUA. He oversees the environmental R&D activities, aiming for sustainable and intensive algae production. In addition, he holds a prominent position in the ATE-Alliance for Energy Transition project 7.01 (Offshore Eolic Turbine), where his work centers on developing optical sensors to monitor the structural health of concrete structures. Moreover, he is participating in the ATE project 9.01 (Natural Gas) as an R&D advisor. His role in these projects has reinforced his technical expertise and allowed him to contribute significantly to the environmental and energy transition sectors. Throughout his career, he has greatly emphasized mentoring the next generation of researchers. He has inspired several MSc and PhD students in their thesis works, and he is currently the principal supervisor for two MSc students, the co-supervisor for three others, and the co-supervisor for a PhD student. This mentorship experience has been integral to his professional development and has provided valuable insights into leadership and project management.
