Aschwin Hillebrand Engelen. Recently appointed to led the Marine Microbial Ecology & Biotechnology at CCMAR, completed his PhD in Mathematics & Natural Sciences in 2004/01/16 at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands. Published >75articles in journals and 2 book chapters. Participated in numerous national and international events, several of which on invitation. Co-supervised over 20 MSc dissertation(s). His research originally was focused on (molecular) ecology of seaweeds, especially invasive seaweeds, their mechanisms of success and impacts. Over the last years his interest shifted to the importance of microbes in marine ecosystems and foundation species like corals, seagrasses and seaweeds. Especially the host-microbiome interaction in composition and function and its drivers is the current focus of research and how this can be applied for biotechnology, conservation and restoration. In his professional activities interacted with 279 collaborator(s) co-authorship of scientific papers. He has been leading various national research projects, work packages in European projects and collaborated n numerous national and international projects.

  4. Haploid females in the isomorphic biphasic life-cycle of Gracilaria chilensis excel in survival. Background Conditional differentiation is one of the most fundamental drivers of biodiversity. Competitive entities (usually species) differ in environmental or ecological niche enabling them to co-exist. Conditional differentiation of haploid and diploid generations is considered to be a requirement for the evolutionary stability of isomorphic biphasic life-cycles and the cause for the natural oc. 2018. 6. Host and Environmental Specificity in Bacterial Communities Associated to Two Highly Invasive Marine Species (Genus Asparagopsis). As habitats change due to global and local pressures, population resilience, and adaptive processes depend not only on their gene pools but also on their associated bacteria communities. The hologenome can play a determinant role in adaptive evolution of higher organisms that rely on their bacterial associates for vital processes. In this study, we focus on the associated bacteria of the two most. 2016. Aires, Tânia; Serrão, Ester; Engelen, Aschwin H.. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/9510.

  7. Rhizosphere microbiomes of european seagrasses are selected by the plant, but are not species specific. Seagrasses are marine flowering plants growing in soft-body sediments of intertidal and shallow sub-tidal zones. They play an important role in coastal ecosystems by stabilizing sediments, providing food and shelter for animals, and recycling nutrients. Like other plants, seagrasses live intimately with both beneficial and unfavorable microorganisms. Although much is known about the microbiomes of. 2016. 8. Macroalgal morphogenesis induced by waterborne compounds and bacteria in coastal seawater. Axenic gametes of the marine green macroalga Ulva mutabilis Foyn (Ria Formosa, locus typicus) exhibit abnormal development into slow-growing callus-like colonies with aberrant cell walls. Under laboratory conditions, it was previously demonstrated that all defects in growth and thallus development can be completely abolished when axenic gametes are inoculated with a combination of two specific bac. 2016. 9. Linear-in-the-parameters oblique least squares (LOLS) provides more accurate estimates of density-dependent survival. Survival is a fundamental demographic component and the importance of its accurate estimation goes beyond the traditional estimation of life expectancy. The evolutionary stability of isomorphic biphasic life-cycles and the occurrence of its different ploidy phases at uneven abundances are hypothesized to be driven by differences in survival rates between haploids and diploids. We monitored Gracila. 2016. Vieira, Vasco M. N. C. S.; Engelen, Aschwin H.; Huanel, Oscar R.; Guillemin, Marie-Laure. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/9167.

  10. Multilocus genetic analyses provide insight into speciation and hybridization in aquatic grasses, genus Ruppia. Aquatic plants of the genus Ruppia inhabit some of the most threatened habitats in the world, such as coastal lagoons and inland saline to brackish waters where their meadows play several key roles. The evolutionary history of this genus has been affected by the processes of hybridization, polyploidization, and vicariance, which have resulted in uncertainty regarding the number of species. 11. Species specificity of bacteria associated to the brown seaweeds lobophora (dictyotales, phaeophyceae) and their potential for induction of rapid coral bleaching in acropora muricata. While reef degradation is occurring worldwide, it is not uncommon to see phase shifts from coral to macroalgal dominated reefs. Numerous studies have addressed the mechanisms by which macroalgae may outcompete corals and a few recent studies highlighted the putative role of bacteria at the interface between macroalgae and corals. Some studies suggest that macroalgae may act as vectors and/or foste. 2016. 12. A comparative evaluation of biological activities and bioactive compounds of the seagrasses Zostera marina and Zostera noltei from southern Portugal. This work assessed the antioxidant potential, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition and the in vitro cytotoxic activity of extracts of the seagrasses Zostera marina and Zostera noltei collected from southern Portugal. The total phenolic contents (TPCs), the rosmarinic acid (RA) concentration (HPLC/DAD) and the fatty acid (FA) profile (GC/MS) are also described. Z. marina had the highest TPC, radi. 2016. 13. Faunal differences between the invasive brown macroalga Sargassum muticum and competing native macroalgae. Interactions between macroalgae and their associated fauna are of great interest for marine invasions, because fauna may increase the biotic resis- tance of a system and macroalgal invasions may cause shifts in faunal composition. We tested for differences in faunal community structure between a macroalgal invader, Sargassum muticum, and several native mac- roalgae in intertidal pools on both the. 2013.
