Rita's academic journey began with an integrated master’s degree in veterinary medicine, at UTAD, where she developed a multidisciplinary perspective that continues to shape her research today. During her studies, she undertook an internship in a Veterinary Hospital in Spain and completed the FELASA training, which further enhanced her technical and ethical knowledge in animal research. Transitioning from veterinary medicine to research, Rita was part of a veterinary team responsible for the in vivo studies of a project under the subject of bone regeneration, where she had the first contact with biomaterial-based therapies. Building on this foundation, she pursued a PhD in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, at I3Bs (University of Minho) where she is now pioneering the use of advanced therapies combining biomaterials and cells, for kidney tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The intersection of biomaterials and kidney regeneration has defined Rita's scientific path. From the earliest stages of her research, she has sought to unravel how extracellular matrices, cells, and biofabrication technologies can converge to advance regenerative medicine. Her work is centered on developing innovative strategies for kidney disease, with a strong emphasis on the development and application of decellularized extracellular matrices. Throughout her career, Rita has engaged in projects that push the boundaries of kidney tissue engineering. Her research has led to the development of a hydrogel and a bioink derived from DKECM, tailored for applications in renal regeneration. Her work has been shared in scientific publications and conferences, contributing to the broader discourse in biomaterials and tissue engineering. She has cultivated expertise in a range of technical areas, including decellularization, hydrogel synthesis, bioprinting, 3D cell culture, and extracellular vesicle isolation. Beyond the lab, Rita is committed to shaping the future of scientific research through mentorship and academic leadership. She has supervised a Master student, contributed to the drafting of competitive research proposals, and actively participates in several academic bodies. She serves as a member of the Scientific Council of I3Bs, an Academic Senate representative, and a Doctoral College I3Bs representative—roles that underscore her leadership and unwavering dedication to advancing both research and academia. Rita’s work sits at the intersection of biomaterials, biofabrication, stem cell biology and extracellular vesicle research, bridging the gap between fundamental science and clinical application. Her medical allows her to approach kidney injury and repair with a comprehensive understanding of both physiological and pathological processes.
