Patrícia Bacalhau has a background in supramolecular chemistry and biochemical mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, holds a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Algarve (Portugal), an MSc degree in Chemistry Teaching and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Évora. Her training in molecular synthesis started in 1999 as a student at ITQB, where Patrícia developed lanthanide coordinated crown azamacrocycles (radiolabelled with 153Sm) for therapeutic use in bone cancer (Portugal). During her Ph.D research , Patrícia engaged the study of the biochemical mechanisms involved in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Her main results involved the discovery of a lead compound with therapeutic benefits for AD. Her Ph.D. was successfully completed in 4 years (2013-2017) and her public defense took place last January. During this time, Patrícia published several peer reviewed papers, a patent and her investigation also produced numerous presentations in international congresses. Currently, Patrícia is preparing two manuscripts with focus on BACE-1. For the past 15 years, Patrícia has been a Physics and Chemistry high school teacher.
