Dr. Haitong Xu is an assistant professor at the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC), Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. He did his PhD work at IST conducting research in guidance and control of autonomous ships and defended his PhD thesis in Jan. 2021 with the qualification of Pass with Distinction and Honour. Currently, He oversees the research on autonomous ships at CENTEC. He has published 60 original scientific research papers, 5 patents and 2 books, where 35 papers were published in SCI journals, and 25 papers on book chapters and conferences. The h-index is 19 (Google) and the total citation is 1140. He supervises the master students, two ongoing PhD students and 4 visiting PhD students. One of the PhD students won the FCT PhD Studentships (4 years) with his co-supervision. He is the principal investigator (PI) of 2 FCT projects, and the Co-Leader of Work Group 5 for the COST Action Project DeWaTra. One of the FCT projects is internal research project within CENTEC Strategic Plan 2025-2029, focusing on the development of low-cost Multi-AutoTugs. The main purpose is to build low-cost autonomous tugs using the 3D printer and open-source platform. The COST project aims to promote a pan-European network and cooperation on decarbonising waterborne transportation, where he serves as the co-leader of WG5, focusing on onboard decision support systems for energy-efficient ship operation. He was also involved in 7 European and FCT R&D projects, such as SHOPERA and MARINET supported by FP7, ROUTING supported by Horizon 2020, ARCWIND funded by ERDF, M&MSHIPS, OBSERVA.FISH and NAVAD, funded by FCT. He is invited as the Guest Editor of 5 special issues on autonomous ships in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (SCI, Q1), Section-chairman of the MARTECH2022, 2024 and RENEW 2024 conferences, and the Review Committee Member of JASNAOE Best Paper Award 2022, and the peer-review for more than 20 international journals. He has collaborated with researchers in different Universities such as NTNU, TECNALIA, LNEC and Escola Naval, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in various areas related to autonomous ship and experimental tests. At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2017, He served as a visiting researcher, focusing on guidance and nonlinear control systems for autonomous ships, and cooperated with Prof. Thor Fossen and Vahid Hassani. At TECNALIA, Spain, he focused on the experiment test for PTO for a wave energy converter. In 2018, he served as the vising lab. assistant at LNEC, where he focused on the ship model tests in shallow water and ship-ship interaction tests. In 2020, he was visiting the Escola Naval and carried out the sea trials using one full-scale ship on the Atlantic. The primary objective of his research in the last 5 years is to design and test the marine control system of autonomous ships, data acquisition (DAQ) and developing prototypes. Meanwhile, he also provides technical support for many research studies at CENTEC and LNEC in successfully acquiring experimental data.
