Maria Lurdes Silva Inacio

Maria L. Inácio holds a degree in Agronomic Engineering, a Master in Plant Production, and a PhD in Forest Engineering, from Univ. Lisboa, with a specialization in Phytopathology. Her passion for plant protection traces back to 1991 during her Erasmus Fellowship in Italy, at the Università degli Studi di Perugia. There, she aspired to deepen her knowledge of emerging plant diseases. Since 1997, as research project fellow, she has been devoted to plant protection against fungi and nematodes, exploring the interactions between biotic agents. Joining the permanent staff at INIAV in 2016, through a competitive public tender, she currently serves as principal investigator in the Plant Health department. ML Inácio has authored approx. 60 articles in indexed journals, contributed to 12 books and book chapters, and delivered over 150 presentations (oral and panels) at conferences. Actively engaged in national and international projects, she has taken on the role of general coordinator or work package leader for 12 of them. Involved in training activities, she has been invited as lecturer in higher education since 2009. She has mentored post-doctoral researchers, PhD, master's, and undergraduate students, significantly contributing to their academic advancement. Adding to her contributions, she is an editorial member and reviewer for both national and several international journals. ML Inácio was appointed as the head of the Nematology Lab in mid-2013, becoming responsible for the planning and coordination of projects and official control plans concerning destructive plant-parasitic nematodes. Since then, she has been focused on expanding and training her team, and to transmit the experience she gained, especially during her time in Wageningen (NL) and Gent (Belgium), to the succeeding generation of Nematologists. ML Inacio is a member of the board of the Agricultural Sciences Society of Portugal (SCAP) and the Portuguese Society of Phytopathology (SPF), and the national representative at the European Society of Nematologists since 2022. Additionally, she represents the country in prestigious European organizations within the field. ML Inácio is a member of Ordem dos Engenheiros (professional nr 28778). The detection of a carcinoma in 2004, along with the subsequent interventions ML Inácio underwent over the following decade, had a notable impact on her scientific output during that period.
