Xavier Jorge is currently working as a Lab technician at the "Chromosomal Segregation in Disease" Lab led by Dr. Sara Carvalhal at the Algarve Biomedical Centre - Research Institute (ABC-Ri). Xavier graduated in Biochemistry (180 ECTs) at the University of Algarve in 2020 (Score 14/20), during his graduation, he performed a research project entitled Spectroscopic studies on the solubility of trehalose and cellobiose in aqueous media (Score 17/20), where he identified an alternative aggregations structure on the trehalose disaccharide that concede him different properties in comparison with other disaccharides. From June to October 2020, due to the world pandemic, Xavier joined the COVID-19 team from the Algarve Biomedical Center where he worked as a Clinical Analysis Technician performing serologic tests and participating in the large-scale mission of testing all the preschool workers at a national level. In the same year, Xavier entered the master's degree of Oncobiology - the molecular mechanism of cancer (120 ECTs) at the University of Algarve and finished the 1st year successfully (Score 15/20). Then joined Carvalhal Lab to perform his master’s degree thesis entitled the molecular mechanisms underlying erroneous segregation on Warsaw Breakage Syndrome (Score 19/20), where he identified a promising candidate for the etiology of the rare syndrome of study. After finishing his master's thesis, he joined Carvalhal Lab as a technician fellow supported by a competitive grant awarded to the lab (Maratona da Saúde). While he continues to work on his master's thesis project (manuscript in preparation); he provides imaging support and management of daily tasks in the lab in two other projects where he is team member: BBBrain, supported by FCT and NeuRare, supported by an award given by AD-ABC. Since joining the Carvalhal lab, he has given poster presentations on his findings at Ageing Without Borders, Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies, and at the 27th Annual Meeting of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Genética Humana. Additionally, he published a revision article in the UALGoritmo magazine of the University of Algarve as first author. He also participated in the Training course «Quality assurance, variant interpretation and data management in the NGS diagnostics era» Organised by the University of Tübingen, and the European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases(EJP RD). Furthermore, he presented his work at the Pizza Club institutional seminar, at the DevoStem Meetings (total of 4 presentations for a group of four ABC-Ri labs), and at the joint labmeeting with the Oliveira and Raimundo Lab from CBR and the Navarro Lab from iMM (total of 3 presentations). During this time, he developed his expertise in quantitative imaging analysis leading to teach at the Hands-on Workshop in ImageJ opened to all the University of Algarve at the topic “how to use macros on FIJI/Image J”. He hopes to continue researching rare syndromes and advance his techniques of imaging even more using different system models like zebrafish. He expect enrolling a PhD program with the support of FCT funding.
