Bernardo Ramos Batista Monteiro (BM). Completed the PhD in Chemistry in 2009 by the University of Aveiro and graduated in Chemistry in 2000 by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. He is an Auxiliary Researcher at the Association of the Instituto Superior Técnico for Research and Development (IST-ID) working at Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear (IPFN, Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion) of Instituto Superior Técnico from the University of Lisbon. He published 42 articles in specialized journals (had 3 magazine covers), 2 book chapters, has 3 registered patents and 2 articles in Proceedings of international conferences. Presented 17 oral communications and 65 panel communications. He was part of the Organizing Committee of 4 international scientific meetings and 3 institutional workshops. He participated as a researcher in 8 financed projects. In 2019, he began to teach the Chemistry Course in the Integrated Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering and since 2021 in gave the course in several different degrees (Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering in Mining and Energy Resources) at Instituto Superior Técnico earning the distinction of “Outstanding Professors of the Department of Chemical Engineering” every year since 2020 until 2024. He supervised master students, undergraduate students, Summer Internships for undergraduate students and Ciência Viva internships for high school students and just started his first supervision of a PhD student with a thesis untitled “Development of functional gradient materials for nuclear fusion reactors”. From 2003 to 2005, he taught Chemistry-Physics, Chemistry and Physics (day and night regimes) from the 10th to the 12th year of schooling. Received 8 prizes. In his professional activities, he interacted with 121 collaborators in co-authoring scientific works. According to Web of Science data, BM has a H-Index 16 and 27 peer review records (24/02/2025)). BM has developed studies from coordination chemistry (lanthanides, transition metals) to the design of new materials (Layered Hydroxide Materials, MOFs, Mixed Matrix Membranes) with applications as catalysts, sensors, remediation and gas separation. Studies with Layered Lanthanide Hydroxide materials (LLHs) lead to the discover for the first time of a behavior of SMM in a Ln-based layered material and an SMM with more than 12 metal centers. BM has also specialized in the development and application of new ILs and salts in several areas as well as their magnetic and thermochemical characterization and applications in membranes. Namely, Ln-based ILs/salts with unusual properties (e.g. thermochromism, ordered self-assembling in the liquid state, solid-state polymorphism, high absolute emission quantum yields) and their application in fluorescent temperature sensing. All this work has given BM a strong background in materials preparation and characterization for several different fields of applications.
