I am a researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences - Okeanos, University of the Azores, working on 1) experimental trials to simulate the cumulative impacts of copper exposure and ocean acidification on cold-water corals physiology and 2) contaminants assessment on commercial seafood species. Previously I had a FCT funded post-doc grant, with a project focus the physiological adaptation of deep-sea species to hostile environments. I dedicate my research to interdisciplinary studies in marine ecotoxicology and ecophysiology. My main goal is to identify the molecular mechanism behind the regulation and detoxification of metal ions in deep-sea organims. Presently I am working with cellular physiology in cold-water corals using proteomics, histology and gene expression as my main tools to identify oxidative stress biomarkers. In pursuit of my goal I had the opportunity to refine my skills in technics such as 2D-electrophoresis, AAS, ICP, DPP, scanning electron microscopy, proteomics, gene expression and histology. Since I start my PhD in 2005, I interrupted my scientific activity twice due to maternity leave. Nonetheless, I continued to win prizes and scholarships that allowed me to carry on my research and published 30 papers in ISI journals, 12 in the last 5 years. According to Google Scholar, my papers were cited 613 times and I have an h-index of 16. I participated in 6 scientific cruises and in 20 multidisciplinary conferences, symposiums and workshop with talks and posters. I attended several hands-on courses: CAL-AQUA handling of live aquatic organims for laboratory experimentation, Protein identification by MS, Recombinant protein production, Spectrophotometry of Molecular Absorption and Fluorescence, Advance Specialization Course on Biomarkers and Bioinformatics training course, reflecting my interdisciplinary and ability to build strong institutional collaborations. I participated in 8 projects as research collaborator, presently I am PI of two Regional projects (IMPACTOR-ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000122) aiming to evaluate the effect of cumulative impacts of human activities and climate change on CWCs health and survival; MoniPol research project aiming to monitor contaminant levels on commecial fish and seafood species. Also a member of H2020 (iAtlantic, MERCES and ATLAS) and national (DeepRisk; JPIO2; PlastDeep) projects research teams. Our research group was pioneer in Portugal in acclimatizing hydrothermal vent organism at atmospheric pressure, allowing the conditions for mussel spawning, setting up pressurized experimental assays been one of the few labs in Europe with a IPOCAMP chamber. My know-now and laboratory expertise significantly advanced for the knowledge of deep-sea species ecology, otherwise difficult to study; understanding of vent organism resilience; improved the scientific capacity of my group and of the research unit and promoted new lines of research and fostered international cooperation. I acted as reviewer for national grant applications, and peer-reviewed for international journals such as, Deep-Sea Research, Marine Environmental Research, Aquatic Toxicology and Frontiers in Marine Science. I seek to communicate my research to the public through social media, popular articles, media interviews and talks. My biggest professional challenge builds on the search and sharing of information, the education of the public for the sciences, and in the combination of different expertise fields of knowledge for a common goal
