José Augusto Afonso is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Electronics of University of Minho (UMinho) and a researcher of the Center for MicroElectroMechanical Systems (CMEMS-UMinho) and the LABBELS Associate Laboratory. He graduated in Electronic Engineering from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, in 1993, obtained the MSc degree in Informatics from University of Minho, Portugal, in 1997, and the PhD degree in Industrial Electronics from University of Minho, in 2005. He has experience in the fields of wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things, body area networks, mobile phone sensing, quality of service, and wireless communication and protocols. He coordinated and/or participated in 17 R&D projects supported by the European Commission or national funding agencies, with industrial and/or academic partners. He is the author of more than 130 scientific publications and 2 patents and supervised 2 PhD and 38 MSc students which concluded their theses. He is an Editorial Board Member of the Energies journal (Impact Factor 3.0) and is/was Guest Editor of five Special Issues in the Energies, Sensors (IF=3.4), Future Internet (IF=2.8) and Electronics (IF=2.6) journals. He was recently a member of the Organizing Committee of the conferences PESE 2023 (EAI International Conference on Power Engineering and Sustainable Energy), SESC 2022 (EAI International Conference on Sustainable Energy for Smart Cities) and SESC 2021, and is/was a member of the Technical Program Committee of conferences such as ICT4AWE 2025 (11th International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies for Ageing Well and e-Health), PESE 2023, SESC 2022, SESC 2021 and SESC 2020, S-CUBE 2020 (EAI International Conference on Sensor Systems and Software) and S-CUBE 2019, and GreeNets 2018 (5th EAI International Conference on Green Energy and Networking). He has been the Director of the Master in Industrial Electronics Engineering and Computers since March 2025, and a member of the Directive Commission of the Doctoral Program in Electronics Engineering and Computers of University of Minho since 2018. He was previously Adjunct Director of the Integrated Master in Industrial Electronics Engineering and Computers (2015-2017) and member of the Directive Commission of the Integrated Master in Communications Engineering (2009-2013).
