Sara Gomes has a Bachelor's degree in Biology by Instituto Superior de Agronomia, UL (2016) and a Master's degree in Microbiology (with honors) by Instituto Superior Técnico, UL (2018). In 2019 was awarded with a Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia PhD grant, in Biotechnology and Biosciences, which still enrols until these days at Instituto Superior Técnico, UL. In 2016, under the scope of the curricular unit Project in Biology, Sara has worked for six months with Vitis vinifera aquaporins (NIPs), more specifically in their characterization. This work resulted in a Bachelor Thesis entitled "Functional characterization of NIPs from Vitis vinifera CV Touriga Nacional using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as heterologous expression system" and, more recently, a publication in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences entitled "Molecular and functional characterization of grapevine in aqy-Null Saccharomyces cerevisiae". Two years later, in 2018, under the scope of the Master Microbiology Dissertation she has worked for a year in a microbiology laboratory at Instituto Superior Técnico that resulted in the work entitled "Genetic and environmental conditions influencing cellular aggregates formation in Burkholderia multivorans". After graduating, until May 2019, was a research intern at Instituto Superior Técnico, UL. From this time in the laboratory, a book chapter entitled "Mucoid switch in Burkholderia cepacian complex bacteria: Triggers, molecular mechanisms and implications in pathogenesis" was published. In the following months, until the beginning of her PhD grant, Sara was awarded with a Research Initiation Grant, at Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences, IST-UL. Since 2018, Sara participates actively in the International Microorganism Day, promoted by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology, in which she has presented two posters. Beside this, she has been present in other activities related to the field, such as seminars, workshops, educational activities and, more recently, in a congress where she had an oral presentation and, a group workshop where she presented a poster. Until now, she was the first author of two papers, and co-author of another two. From February, 2022 until August, 2022, she was a Visiting Researcher at her Co-advisor lab at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. Her work field is Biological Sciences, more precisely, Microbiology.
