Silvia Valenzuela-Lamas, Tenured Scientist (Científica Titular) no Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (IMF-CSIC). I am a zooarchaeologist focused on how socio-economic changes shape animal husbandry practices through time. As PI of the ERC-StG project: ‘ZooMWest: Zooarchaeology and Mobility in the Western Mediterranean from the Late Bronze Age to Late Antiquity’ (2017-2022) I have investigated mobility patterns of livestock together with animal management (frequency of the species herded, size of the animals, presence of pathologies linked to malnutrition), in order to understand the consequences of different economic and political scenarios over animal husbandry. The methodological approach includes taxonomy, taphonomy, osteometry, isotopic analysis (strontium, carbon and oxygen), ancient DNA and dental microwear. I also investigate meat consumption as indicator or cultural influence and social status. In particular, I have focused on medieval Jewish communities in Iberia, and the origin of different meat consumption patterns in the Mediterranean during the Iron Age.
