Marta Costa is an Assistant Researcher, at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) - University of Minho (UM), focusing on the development of innovative cancer therapeutics. Marta is also co-founder of the spin-off Karion Therapeutics, where she serves as CEO. With degree in Applied Chemistry (UM, 2006) and a PhD in Sciences - Organic Chemistry (UM, 2011), Marta's journey includes roles as a Medicinal Chemist at the pharmaceutical Bial, postdoctoral positions at the Chemistry Department - UM (2012-2014) and international experience at Leiden University Medical Center (2012). Joining the ICVS in 2015 as a post-doctoral fellow, Marta now displays multidisciplinary expertise as an Assistant Researcher. Her focus centers on pioneering therapies, particularly small molecule-based organic compounds, targeting aggressive cancers like triple negative breast cancer and renal cell carcinoma. Noteworthy contributions comprise international publications, book chapters, and two patents (WO/2020/261242 and WO/2021/191882). She actively involved in the supervision of numerous students across academic levels, supervising research projects, and contributing to teaching and science dissemination activities. Marta has earned recognition with multiple national and international awards. Notably, her work was honored with the Born from Knowledge award (BfK, 2023), Arqus International Innovators Award (2023), Innovation Award Bluepharma (2022), SpinUM award (2022), UI-CAN award (2022), LPCC-NRN research grants (2019, 2022), FEDER project grant (2020). Driven to enhance cancer patient survival and their quality of life, Marta is a medical chemist dedicated to advancing innovative cancer therapeutics.
