Ruy Miguel Ribeiro finished his undergraduate studies in Engenharia Física Tecnológica at Instituto Superior Técnico, LIsboa, in 1994, and completed the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in "Mathematical Biology" in 1999 at the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, UK. He is a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM, USA and Guest Associate Professor at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. He has published over 140 papers in the international peer-reviewed literature. He uses mathematical, statistical and computational models to study the immune system and the immune response against infectious agents. This work is done in close proximity with clinical and experimental investigators to develop appropriate models to analyze experimental data on HIV, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, influenza, SARS, and homeostasis and dynamics of T cells, in health and disease. The domains of study include infection dynamics, pharmacological interventions, evolution of resistance, vaccine development and pathogenesis, both at the within-host and epidemiological level. He works directly with experimental collaborators to tackle questions of clinical relevance to our understanding of viral infections.
