Born in Porto, Madalena Soveral (PhD in music, Université Paris 8, Master in Music, Université Paris 8, Licence de Concert, École Normale de Musique de Paris,Diploma Superior de Piano, C.M. Porto) studied piano under mother guidance, Hélia Soveral. She completed her piano specialization studies with Reine Gianoli, Marian Rybicki, Helena Costa and Claude Helffer. In 1966 she awarded the “900 Musicale Europeo” prize, in Naples (Italy). Madalena Soveral has given regular concerts since 1990, both solo and with orchestra, as well as various forms of chamber music. Among the performances in Portugal and abroad (Italy, France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Switzerland, Morocco, Macau, Spain and Brazil), of note are her participation in the festivals of Naples, Santiago de Compostela, Sceaux, Festival de Montpellier-Radio France, Mantova (Italy), UNESCO Twentieth Century Music Festival (Paris), Música Nova (Brasil), 1st Lisbon Festival of Contemporary Musics (Lisbonne, T.N.S.C.), Flâneries Musicales de Reims as well as at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecília (Roma), Theatre du Rond-Point, Salle Gaveau, Auditorium des Halles (Paris) and Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, Culturgest and Casa da Música. She recorded more than 10 albums of contemporary piano music, including the complete piano pieces from A. Schoenberg, A. Berg, Webern and Emmanuel Nunes. Throughout her concert activity, Madalena Soveral has paid particular attention to the repertoire of the 20th century, collaborating with composers and performers. Noteworthy in this context is her work with the composer Giacinto Scelsi, Beat Furrer, and with several Portuguese composers, with the group “Les Percussions de Strasbourg”, as well as the collaboration with the pianist Jean-Louis Haguenauer and the percussionists Christian Hamouy and Georges van Gucht. With this group she participated in recordings for French Radio and Television and recorded two CDs for the French label P.Verany. Madalena made numerous national premieres of works by J. Adams, Yanacek, Roslavets, Scelsi, G. Crumb, A. Lourié, Kurtág, J. Harvey (Tombeau de Messiaen, for piano and band), as well as world premieres among which she mentions in particular, the pieces dedicated to her: Estudos de Sonoridades by Filipe Pires, Interrogations by Miguel Graça Moura, In Tempore for piano and electronics by João Pedro Oliveira, Dominos by Sharon Kanach, Episode for two pianos, marimba and vibraphone by Francis Bayer. Coordenator Professor at the Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo do Porto, Madalena Soveral has been invited to give masterclasses at several institutions in Europe and Portugal . Since 1997, Madalena Soveral has been working on a research project on the 20th Century at the University of Paris 8, focused on practical and analythical issues of contemporary piano music. Étude Analytique des Litanies du feu et de la mer d’Emmanuel Nunes, carried out between 1997-99, constitued the first part of that worth. In 2005 she completed the Doctorat in Music with the teses Quatre compositeurs, Quatre oeuvres: la musique portugaise pour piano des années 90, published in Presses Academiques Francophones (PAF, 2016). As a researcher, she published various articles in national and international journals, edited four books on Performance and and Contemporary Piano Music Music with British (Cambridge Scholars Publishing), American (Vernon Press) and Italian (Libreria Musicale Italiana) publishers. She is invited as speaker/performer at international and national conferences. Since 2006 has been part of the CESEM research Center (Centro de Estudos de Sociologia e Estética Musical) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She collaborated in research projects and chaired organizing committes for venues with high international impact such International/bilateral Conference Performance Analysis (Porto 2016, Messina 2018), IV and V International Contemporary Piano Meeting (Porto 2016, S. Paulo2020).
