Hugo is a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Structural Integrity at the University of Coimbra, holding a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the same institution. One of Hugo's significant abilities is his programming knowledge, which enables him to solve complex research problems and proficiently analyse and interpret large amounts of data. Throughout his academic career, Hugo has shown particular interest in programming and structural integrity, which motivated him to pursue these fields of study. He learned finite element software such as Ansys and Abaqus and programming languages such as Python, Fortran, and Visual Basic. During his master's thesis, he created a numerical model that simulated the impact of marine exposure on composite material's static behaviour. Although this topic is very complex and not well understood in the literature, he developed an automatic iterative procedure programmed in Fortran, integrated into the commercial finite element software Abaqus. His research culminated in his first scientific article published in Polymers, a Q1 journal with an impact factor of 5. Additionally, he contributed to two other publications in Q1 Elsevier journals: one in Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics with an impact factor of 5.3, and another in Polymer Degradation and Stability with an impact factor of 5.9. The latter publication holds particular significance as it validates the accuracy of the model developed during his master's thesis and which was further utilized in his first two articles. Additionally, Hugo contributed to a chapter to an upcoming Elsevier book on modelling composites using the finite element method in a book were a renowned expert in the area, J.N. Reddy, also contributed. Currently, he has obtained a research grant from CEMMPRE and is utilizing their facilities to generate further scientific outputs. Upon receiving the scholarship, Hugo embarked on a mission to disseminate his scientific research findings via oral presentations at international speciality conferences. To this end, Hugo has participated in the following conferences: the 6th International Conference on Structural Integrity and Durability held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, September 20-23, 2022; the 1st International Conference on Materials Science) held in Porto, Portugal from November 3-4, 2022; the International Conference on Recent Advances in Structural Engineering and Mechanics held, in Belgrade, Serbia from April 2-4, 2023; and the NewFrac Conference on New Computational Strategies for Fracture to be held in Porto, Portugal from May 7-10, 2024. In addition to his research activities, Hugo is an invited assistant professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, FCTUC. Here, he teaches Structural Mechanics, Automatic Computation of Structures, and Analysis of Advanced Structures. These courses are related with the finite element method and accurate structural modeling, closely aligned with his research focus. Hugo's dedication to teaching is evident in the feedback received from students, garnering a rating of 4.1 out of 5. In addition to teaching, he is adviser of a master's student whose dissertation topic involves implementing a progressive fatigue failure model.
