Filipe Oliveira-Brás (FOB) graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Aveiro in 2021. During his undergraduate studies, he achieved excellent results in multiple fields, including cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, mathematics, and informatics, with a final grade of 18/20 (ECTS classification: A). His final report focused on the synthesis and characterization of inorganic nanoparticles (mesoporous silica nanoparticles) loaded with a polyphenol (resveratrol) for the treatment of melanoma. This nanomedicine project was performed at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, which is one of the best research units in the fields of (bio)materials science and nanotechnology in Portugal. Moreover, FOB had the opportunity to work with another Associated Laboratory (CESAM) on the evaluation of the cytotoxicity and the cell cycle interference of the therapeutic formulation on the A375 melanoma cell line. He remained working in this project as a volunteer from November 2022 to May 2023. During this period, FOB pursued a master’s degree in Biochemistry, specializing in Clinical Biochemistry, at the same university, where he completed the degree in December 2023 with a final grade of 19/20 (ECTS classification: A). This specialization helped him gain a deeper understanding of the biochemical mechanisms underlying various pathological conditions. This knowledge led him to choose the topic of his master’s thesis, in which FOB investigated metabolic changes that occur in skeletal muscle wasting associated with type 2 diabetes, in the LAQV-REQUIMTE research unit. During the project, he gained expertise in handling biological samples (blood and skeletal muscle) from rodents, and develop strong experience in various laboratory techniques, including protein quantification, SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, enzymatic activity determination and NMR. Throughout his academic journey, FOB actively engaged in scientific conferences and workshops, notably participating in the “Metabolic Map Contest” (2021), and presenting his research twice in the “Poster Contest” (2022, 2023) of the “Biochemistry Day” scientific conference. In 2022, he won the Best Poster award for his findings on the effects of obesity in inducing oxidative stress in hepatocytes. In addition to his academic pursuits, FOB was a member of the Núcleo de Estudantes de Química da Associação Académica da Universidade de Aveiro from 2022 to 2023, first as a member of the Pedagogy and Entrepreneurship sector and then as vice-coordinator. In these roles, he primarily organized and prepared pedagogical events, workshops and seminars for biochemistry, chemistry and biotechnology students at the University of Aveiro. Through this student association, FOB also had the opportunity to improve his skills in project management, science communication, teamwork and leadership. In addition to his laboratory skills, he has developed proficiency in various software applications, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), GraphPad (statistical analysis), ImageLab (image acquisition and analysis), Chenomx (NMR spectra analysis), and NUTS (NMR spectra analysis and quantification). Additionally, he has a strong command of the English language (Cambridge B1 European level in 2015) and a basic understanding of the Spanish language. At the moment he is working in biotecnology research group at the University of Coimbra for the development of innovative therapy for stroke.
