Sara Carmo Silva's degree is in Clinical Analysis and Public Health, with a final research project at Coimbra University Hospitals in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Furthermore, Sara is a Master in Cellular and Molecular Biology (University of Aveiro), and a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences, completed in 2017 from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra. In her PhD, Sara specialised in Cellular and Molecular Biology, with a project developed at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) , with international collaboration with the University of Utah in the United States of America and University of Campinas in Brasil, where Sara did a secondment. This project was focused on the role of a protein called ataxin-2, in hypothalamic physiology on obesity. The results obtained from her PhD were novel and unexpected, granting Sara multiple awards, from international renowned entities such as Keystone, Gordon, EMBO, IBRO, FENS, EADS and EASO, but also from Pharma companies, namely a 20K grant from Janssen Pharmaceutic. Resulting from this work, still as a PhD student, Sara started to implement an innovative research line, aiming to evaluate biological clock disruption in metabolic dysfunction. In this research group, Sara conducted studies involving both animal models and human subjects for the study of biological clocks upon metabolic dysfunction, as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Sara also worked as an Assistant Researcher at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing -MIA Portugal- of the University of Coimbra, part of the research group led by Ira Milosevic. Her work focused on Neurosciences, scrutinising the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in mouse models with defective synaptic vesicle recycling. Building on this academic background, Sara Carmo Silva is currently an Adjunct Professor in Coimbra Health School, mostly teaching in the field of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Histology and Research applied to Health. Furthermore, Sara currently develops her research at the Health and Technology Research Center (H&TRC), as an integrated member, focusing on the molecular chronobiology of metabolic diseases. Sara Carmo Silva has a h index of 9 and 310 citations.
