Joana Desterro is a PhD/MD currently working as a Clinical Hematologist at Instituto Português de Oncologia, Francisco Gentil of Lisbon. She completed a Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology degree at the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon in 1994 and a PhD in Biochemistry in 1999 at the School of Biology, University of St Andrews, UK. In 2012, she was awarded a Medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon and completed her Specialist training in Clinical Hematology in 2019. She is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon and a Researcher at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (Carmo-Fonseca´s Group). Her main motivation in Biomedical Sciences was always related to the regulation of gene expression, namely splicing and SUMO modification, and how errors in these cellular processes lead to cancer development. Her work produced several original research papers.
