I have a PhD in Molecular Biology (ITQB-NOVA, 2013) and a degree in Plant Biology (FCUL, 2003). My research focuses on studying the genetic and molecular basis of secondary growth in trees and model plants, with emphasis on vascular cambium and cork cambium activity and my CV includes description of some of the few known regulators of secondary growth (e.g. PtACL5, PtSHR, AtSOBIR1). I have experience with a large spectrum of trees and secondary growth model systems, such as Populus, Arabidopsis, maritime pine and cork oak. Since my PhD, I was a post-doc at H. Touminen Lab at UPSC (Umeå, SE), dedicated to molecular aspects of wood formation (Milhinhos et al. 2020). From 2015-2017, I was awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship Grant to work at Plant Sciences, Univerisity of Oxford (UK; mentors: Javier Agusti, Liam Dolan), to continue to study wood formation exploring the natural variation of secondary growth through GWAS in Arabidopsis (Milhinhos et al. 2019). In 2018, I was awarded a CEEC-IND/2017 salary grant (FCT) in a competitive call to sponsor my return to PT and start building my own research lines (ITQB-NOVA) and I work at ForGen Lab (FCUL), taking advantage of the expertise gained throughout my career and internationalization, as shown by publications in high ranked journals, such as Plant J (Milhinhos et al 2013), J Exp Bot (Miguel et al 2016) or PNAS (Milhinhos et al 2019). --- Career path statement: Deciphering molecular mechanisms and developmental aspects of tree biology, namely secondary growth. I am interested in finding the functional role of genes for secondary growth traits. There has been a immense amount of genomic and transcriptomic data produced and unveiled in the past years, the translation of this information to agro-forestry is desirable. My main interest is understanding and translating this information into concrete valuable information for farmers and stakeholders to use. Sponsored by a CEEC-IND/2017 salary grant (FCT), I am establishing my own lines of research at Green-IT (ITQB-NOVA) & BioISI (FCUL) while collaborating as an Invited Assistant Professor at FCUL. In recent years, I worked at: (1) University of Oxford (Oxford, UK; Sep/2015-Dec/2017) - Marie Sklodowska-Curie individual fellow (PIs: J Agusti/L Dolan); (2) UPSC (Umeå, Sweden; Oct-Dec/2013 & Jan-Aug/2015) - Invited Post-Doc Researcher & later Senior Researcher for BioImprove & FuncFiber projects to enhance wood properties for Biomass (PI: H Touminen); (3) iBET (Oeiras, PT; Jan-Dec/2014) - post doc for ProCoGen European project (PI: CM Miguel). I collaborated with A. Miguel resulting in authorships in J Exp Bot (Miguel et al 2016), with A. Rodrigues in Scientific Reports (Rodrigues et al 2019), with A. Alves in FPS (Alves et al 2022); (4) ITQB-NOVA (Oeiras, PT; Oct/2008-Jul/2013) - PhD studies (Milhinhos, 2013; Advisor: CM Miguel), describing a safeguard negative feedback loop mechanism specific to xylem to maintain thermospermine homeostasis, involving auxin and HD-ZIPIIIs, resulting in 2 publications (Plant J & Plant Cell Rep); (5) CRAG (Barcelona, SP; Oct2007-Jul2008 - Effect of brassinosteroids and HD-Zip III TFs functions in root meristem and vascular development (Advisor: Dr. A. C.-Delgado); (6) ITQB-NOVA undergraduate, generated in vitro cultures of cork oak (Q. suber) from adult provenance & conducted histochemical and histological studies to somatic embryogenesis of maritime pine (P. pinaster) (Milhinhos, 2003; Advisor: M. Margarida Oliveira & C. Pinto Ricardo, Oeiras, PT). I have ongoing collaborations with Javi Agusti and Miguel A.
