Bruno Oliveira is an Assistant Researcher at C2TN-IST since 2023 funded by a prestigious FCT Stimulus Fellowship. He received his PhD in Nuclear Medicine, University of Lisbon in 2012. His interests are in the field of biomedical research, with an emphasis on the use of chemical probes and molecular imaging methods (PET, SPECT, fluorescence) to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of disease in living cells and/or subjects. His PhD work was focused on the identification of 99mTc SPECT probes for imaging Nitric Oxide Synthase overexpressed in specific tumor types, being the first example of metal complexes that recognize this enzyme. During his PhD Bruno visited the research groups of Francisco Blanco (CNIO, Madrid), Roger Alberto (University of Zurich) and Maria João Ramos (University of Porto), expanding his background to other scientific areas like protein expression and purification (J Mol Biol 2010, 396, 1117), organometallic (Org Biomol Chem 2010, 8, 2829) and computational chemistry (J Mol Graphics Modell 2013, 45, 13). After his PhD, Bruno Oliveira was a NIH Assistant Researcher at the MGH/Harvard Medical School (2013 - 2015) in the group of Peter Caravan. In the US his work led to the discovery of a Fibrin-Binding Probe for PET imaging of thrombus, which is currently under clinical studies. From 2015 to the end of 2018, Bruno was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Cambridge (UK) in the group of Gonçalo Bernardes sponsored by a prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship. His work focused on the development of new bioorthogonal reactions for biomedical applications. For example, in Cambridge, his work resulted in a significant breakthrough with the discovery of a cleavable reaction for prodrug activation, which is triggered by platinum complexes (JACS 2020, 142, 10869; inside cover). In 2019, Bruno secured his first FCT Stimulus Fellowship to join iMM. More recently, he was awarded with the same prestigious grant to start his own line of research at C2TN-IST. At the core of his work is the development of innovative strategies for modification of antibodies and small proteins for imaging and drug-delivery. Bruno´s scientific work until today resulted in 45 articles published in journals with an average IF of 11.1 (e.g. JACS, Angew Chem, Chem Sci, Nature Comm, JNM, Chem Soc Rev, Nature Rev Chem; >3300 citations; h-index 26), more than 50 scientific communications (20 invited oral communications, 6 conference articles, 25 posters), 4 cover articles, and 2 Alavi-Mandell awards. These publications are a good example of Bruno´s international recognition, and are a clear evidence of the various international collaborations that he currently maintain. Bruno was recently awarded with two research grants as PI to study new chemical methods to produce novel protein-drug conjugates (SIMICA, 800K €) and to detect GlycoRNA modifications in cancer biology (FCT, PTDC/MED-QUI/4160/2021, 249K €). The SIMICA project involved the participation of 5 European partners and intended to place Portugal within the core of European Laboratories that seeks to produce cutting-edge research in the field of protein modification. Bruno is participating or participated in 3 multidisciplinary FCT projects in the field of biomedicine. Since 2016 Bruno has been enrolled in teaching activities (Part IB chemistry teaching labs and Part III vivas at Cambridge). Until today he co-supervised more than 18 research projects of national or international master and PhD students. At C2TN Bruno has already supervised 2 MSc students (1 to completion and 1 ongoing), 1 first cycle project integrator student and 2 Erasmus students. Bruno has served as peer-reviewer in top journals, evaluator of EU research projects, examiner of PhD thesis, organizer of 4 scientific events, and chair in scientific meetings. Currently, Bruno is an objective driver of the thematic strand "Radiopharmaceutical Sciences and Health Physics" and responsible for the SPECT/PET-CT scanner at C2TN.
