Raphaël F. Canadas completed his Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2009 at the Nova University of Lisbon. In 2011, he obtained a Master's Degree in Bioengineering and Nanosystems at Instituto Superior Técnico, focusing his research topic on the added value of industrial glycerol residues as by-products for the cultivation of stem cells. During this period, Raphaël published his first scientific article. From 2011 to 2014, he worked on research projects related to the engineering of bone and cartilage and the exploration of marine resources for applications in regenerative medicine. In March 2014, the researcher started his doctoral degree in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and Stem Cells at the University of Minho in cooperation with Stanford University. His doctoral thesis (2018) focused on "Advanced technological approaches for 3D hierarchical living tissues". The project was developed between the 3B's Research Group at Univ. of Minho and the BAMM Lab at Stanford Univ. Acknowledging the quality of Raphaël Canadas' doctoral work, he was awarded grants from FCT and FLAD, won the Kima Competition by Cellix (Ireland) and the Best Poster Presentation by the Royal Society of Chemistry at the European TERMIS 2019. His research work and technological inventions were also distinguished with the Honourable Mention of the Fundação D. Manuel II of the Portuguese Royal House, which recognizes the excellence in Biomedical Research carried out by a scientist under 40 years old. As postdoc researcher, Raphaël also worked at University College London and University of Twente as a Visiting Scientist. At UCL, the researcher developed ex vivo models using a custom-made bioreactor system for drug and implant testing. At Univ. of Twente, Raphaël collaborated on the development of a microfluidic platform for cancer detection. Raphaël F. Canadas has been working in the fields of cell biology, biomaterials and microfluidics for regenerative medicine and cancer diagnostics. He has participated in multiple projects in multidisciplinary fields. Raphaël is/was the Principal Investigator (PI) of 5 projects which focused on (i) creating a drug screening platform, (ii) developing an anti-viral biodegradable and cytocompatible formulation, (iii) studying bioactive compounds extracted from natural resources for medicine, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals, (iv) developing nature-derived anti-microbial formulations to be used in medical textiles, and (v) investigating a new panel of biophysical biomarkers to identify bladder cancer cells secreted in urine. Overall, he has granted 5.3M Eur in funding for fundamental and translational research. Resulting of Raphaël scientific work, he has produced 28 peer-reviewed publications, with 433 citations (42.3% in the top 25% most cited documents worldwide; h-index 12; source: Scopus), having 53.8% of documents co-authored with researchers in international collaboration and 11.5% in Academic-Corporate collaborations. Among these, Raphaël was the first author of 5 scientific articles (average Impact Factor of 10.5) and the corresponding author of two articles and one book chapter. Furthermore, he authored/co-authored 9 book chapters, invented 3 patents, and delivered 9 invited lectures. Over this period, he has supervised 6 technical students, 3 Master students, 4 Master research fellows, 2 Ph.D. students, and 4 postdocs. Raphaël was also a Guest Editor of the Journal ‘Medicine in Novel Technology and Devices’ and a co-founder of two companies.
