Marta Alenquer (MA) is a virologist with longstanding expertise in herpesviruses, influenza A virus and, more recently, in SARS-CoV-2. Her scientific career has been dedicated to understanding virus-host interactions at both the cellular and organismal levels, identifying host factors and pathways essential for viral replication, as well as viral proteins and virulence factors that impact viral disease in animal models of infection. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, MA has also been actively involved in the study of antivirals, including anti-SARS-CoV-2 and anti-influenza A virus biopharmaceuticals. Her achievements in the field include: 1) the paradigm-changing discovery that influenza A virus creates biomolecular condensates with liquid properties dedicated to the assembly of the viral genome (Alenquer et al., 2019, Nat. comms, 10:1629; Etibor et al., 2023, eLife.85182); 2) the development of an alternative method to diagnose SARS-CoV-2 infection in children using saliva and bypassing RNA extraction (Alenquer et al., 2022, Plos one 17 (6), e0268388); 3) the development of a pseudovirus-based neutralization assay to study the ability of evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants to escape pre-existing immunity developed upon natural infection or vaccination (Alenquer et al., 2021, PLoS Pathogens 17 (8), e1009772); 4) the molecular mechanisms employed by the murid herpesvirus-4 protein M2 to establish latency in mice (Miranda and Alenquer et al., 2008, PloS one 3 (2), e1654; Marques et al., 2008, PLoS Pathogens 4 (10), e1000177). ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ RESEARCH OUTPUTS: MA is the author of 19 scientific papers in highly reputable international peer-reviewed journals (Nature communications, PLOS Pathogens, Cell, eLife, Cell Reports Medicine, etc). Her work has been cited over 1800 times and her h-index is 15 (Google Scholar). Principal Investigator of a 3-year SR&TD project grant funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (240k euros, 2018-2022) focusing on the role of influenza A virus genome binding to mitochondria. Currently participates in 3 European-funded projects (ERC-2020-COG 101001521; CaixaResearch Health 2022 HR22-00722; HORIZON-HLTH-2023-DISEASE-03 101137419). Her work on saliva as an alternative sample to diagnose and monitor SARS-CoV-2 infection in children won the prize "Grande Prémio SPP" awarded by the Portuguese Pediatric Society. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CURRENT POSITION: Since October 2022, MA is a Staff Scientist at the new research institute Católica Biomedical Research Centre (CBR) and an Assistant Professor at Católica Medical School, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP).
