Joana B. Caldeira: PhD student in Biosciences at the University of Coimbra (with a PhD Research Scholarship from FCT). Master in Biochemistry since 2019/07 and Bachelor in Biochemistry since 2017/07, both in Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. The master thesis with the title 'Biological Mechanisms for the Control of Oxidative Stress Induced by Critical Metals in Bacteria' had the objective to study and understand the biological mechanisms behind the oxidative stress in response to exposure to critical metals, particularly indium and gallium, with quantification of bacteria capacity to uptake metal, evaluation of bacterial viability, quantification of reactive oxygen species and levels of reduced glutathione, determination of superoxide dismutase activity and characterization of the superoxide dismutase induced by the metals. The main scientific area is focused on bacteria-metal interactions, exploring mechanisms and proteins from bacteria to cope with heavy metals. The ultimate objective is to obtain strains that can remove metal from the environment and can be used as biological tools (biotools) exploring molecular biology techniques (like obtaining an indium bioaccumulator by mutagenesis). Joana B. Caldeira worked with research grants in different projects: ERAMIN2 REVIVING, MicroMineR and ERA-MIN. Published 4 articles in international scientific journals, 3 of them as first author: frontiers in Microbiology (2021), Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology (2021), and Scientific Reports (2020). Participated in some scientific divulgation events with 2 oral presentations (SCI-COM-E ‘23 and Microbiotec ‘21), 4 poster presentations (MicroBiotec'23, FEMS Congress 2023, FEMS Conference 2022 and Microbiotec ‘19), and some events as an organization member (such as different editions of International Microorganisms Day).
