I am a Biologist with a PhD in Molecular and Environmental Biology (2020), conducted at University of California, Davis (USA; research host) and University of Minho (Portugal; degree host), mentored by Prof. Min Zhao. My dissertation focused on the redox–bioelectric interplay during Xenopus regeneration, where I demonstrated that atmospheric oxygen influx generates hydrogen peroxide, which subsequently modulates electrical currents (Development 2016, Nature Communications 2018, Nature Protocols 2020). In parallel, a collaborative effort uncovered the differential electrotaxis of enterobacteria in the mouse gut (Nature Microbiology 2024). Additionally, I contributed to seven other studies exploring the roles of redox and bioelectric cues in the mammalian cornea and rodent gut. As a postdoctoral researcher, I was awarded a long-term European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) fellowship to investigate the mechanobiology of Xenopus regeneration (manuscript in preparation) at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (Portugal). Another research line uncovered a mechanoelectrical mechanism that drives collective cell migration via electrotaxis during Xenopus development (Nature Materials 2025). My research in the Biological Sciences and Biophysics aims to decipher the biochemical–biophysical crosstalk that governs vertebrate regeneration and development. I have applied advanced techniques to study the redox, electrical, and mechanical properties of living organisms. My toolkit includes self-referencing vibrating voltage probes and ion-selective microelectrodes, glass microelectrodes, direct current electric fields, micro-optrodes, microfluidics, laser ablation, tension probes, and in vivo atomic force microscopy. This interdisciplinary approach, combining different biophysical techniques with state of the art molecular biology tools, is central to my work. In the early stages of my career, I have collaborated with research institutions in the USA, Portugal, and Germany, resulting in 12 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (h-index 6, Scopus 2025), 2 preprints, and 3 research funding awards. I have also served as a peer reviewer for academic papers and evaluated a Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) research grant.
