Dr Paola Sanjuan Alberte was awarded an MPharm degree by the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 2015, where she developed a small project in the area of Nanotechology applied to drug delivery under the supervision of Prof Maria Jose Alonso. She completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham (currently 5th in the world for Pharmacy and Pharmacology) in 2019 under the supervision of Dr Frankie Rawson, Prof Richard Hague, Prof Morgan Alexander and Prof Chris Denning. Her thesis was a multidisciplinary project involving different areas such as Bioelectronics, Tissue Engineering, and Additive Manufacturing. After completion of her PhD she joined the international team of the EPSRC Healthcare Technologies Award granted to Dr Frankie Rawson. Subsequently, she was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Minnesota (US) where she had the opportunity to work in the laboratories of Prof Michael McAlpine, a leader in the 3D printed bioelectronics field. Paola was then awarded an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow, an award aimed at developing an independent research career and to increase the impact of the PhD work. Through this, she led an international collaboration between the University of Nottingham (UK) and the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST, Portugal) to develop novel bioelectronic and bioprinting systems. The success of this collaboration led to the awarding of the UK-Portugal Bilateral Research Fund and supervision of MSci students with Prof Frederico Ferreira. In 2022 she was awarded with two independent fellowships, a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship and a 'la Caixa' Junior Leader Fellowship, a position she is currently holding at the IST for the development of novel nanobioelectronic tools towards cancer therapeutics. She was also awarded an FCT exploratory project as PI and a BBSRC International Partnership Fund as co-PI. Her work has led to several publications in Q1 high impact journals including Advanced Functional Materials, Food Hydrocolloids, Biomaterials Advances, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and WIREs: Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology; in addition to other publications in more specialised journals. Paola has actively engaged with the scientific community through national and international conferences and symposiums, with special highlight in the 4th Asilomar Bioelectronics Symposium (California, US) where she was awarded for best poster presentation. In 2023 she co-funded and co-organised the 2023 British-Iberian Bioelectronics Workshop in Lisbon. She has successfully co-supervised 12 MSci and and is currently participating in the supervision of 4 MSci and 3 PhD students.
