Mariana Girão

Mariana Girão is a Researcher at CIIMAR, University of Porto, holding a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2024) from ICBAS, University of Porto, with a specialization in marine microbial biotechnology. She also holds a BSc in Aquatic Sciences and an MSc in Cell and Molecular Biology. Since 2015, when she joined CIIMAR as an intern under the renowned “Blue Young Talent” program, she has been bioprospecting marine actinobacteria for the discovery of novel biotechnologically relevant molecules with applications in the pharmaceutical and industrial sectors. She has developed expertise across multidisciplinary fields, particularly in microbiology, molecular biology, metabolomics, and natural product chemistry. During her PhD studies, she visited and worked in two prominent international laboratories in the field of natural products: Fundación MEDINA (Granada, Spain) and the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (Paris, France). She has presented her research as the first author at 18 national and international conferences, authored 9 peer-reviewed publications in several journals, and supervised multiple BSc and MSc students from national and international institutions. She has been an active team member of several national and international projects (ActinoDeepSea, ATLANTIDA, ActINglow, SAFE). She is actively involved in various dissemination and outreach activities and has received awards for her work in science communication for the general public. She has organized and served as a speaker at a scientific graphic design workshop, under the Blue Biotechnology and Bioengineering for Current and Future Development of a Blue Bioeconomy in Portugal (BlueBio4Future) initiative. Mariana is also an active member of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM).
