The cornea is the first line of defence for our eye. While avoiding the entrance of pathogen agents, it also hampers the penetration of drugs and the efficacy of medications. I am focused on developing innovative and advanced nanotechnology-based strategies for the treatment of cornea-related diseases, taking advantage of the biochemical and cellular mechanisms of the eye. I am a researcher at the Centre for Chemical Engineering and Renewable Resources for Sustainability (CERES) of the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal. I am also a collaborator with the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) and the Faculty of Medicine of the UC (FMUC). My collaborative network includes national and international researchers highly experienced in biochemistry, vision sciences, nanomedicine, material sciences, and optics, as well as recognised ophthalmologists and pathologists, and the biotech industry, orchestrated in a real value chain. In 2007, I received my MSc degree from the UC in Biochemical Engineering, with a specialisation in Biomaterials. In 2013, I received my PhD from the University Nova de Lisboa (Portugal), Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier, in Chemistry, with a specialisation in Nanotechnology. From February 2014 to December 2018, as a postdoctoral fellow at iCBR, I became interested in vision sciences, particularly retinal degenerative diseases. Since December 2018, I have been developing advanced nanotechnology-based strategies for the treatment of ocular diseases. My breakthroughs have been shared with the scientific and clinical communities in 26 peer-reviewed papers, mainly as the first and corresponding author (18/26), 7 papers in conference proceedings, 2 book chapters, 10 oral communications, and 13 poster communications at national and international scientific events. I have been publishing in the Analytical Chemistry, Biomaterials, Nanomedicine & Nanotechnology, Ophthalmology, and Polymer Science categories in Q1 (14/26 papers), including top 5% (2/26) and top 10% (4/26), journals, resulting in a total of 651 citations (Web of Science ResearcherID: B-1703-2012, June 2024) and an h-index of 16. My supervision experience is mirrored in 1 PhD (co-supervisor, ongoing), 6 master's theses, and 20 undergraduate training and lab rotations. I have contributed with competitive funding from national funding agencies, around 100k euros, namely as Principal Investigator, around 500k euros from FCT and SCML, as a team member, and around 250k euros to human resources. I have been working in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country (UBC, Spain), the Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes (CEMMPRE, UC), the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT, UC), the Coimbra Chemistry Centre (CQC, UC) (UC R&Ds unit graded Excellent), the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra (CHUC), the Institute for Research & Innovation in Health (i3S, Porto, Portugal) and the Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisboa, Portugal). Since 2015, I have been invited as a lecturer in postgraduate courses such as the Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences, the Master in Biomedical Research and Molecular and Translational Neuroscience (UC), and Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices (University of Aveiro, Portugal), as well as undergraduate courses in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering (UC). I have participated as a team member in 12 national and international projects, which has also allowed me to establish successful international and national successful collaborations. I organised awareness outreach activities, such as World Sight Day, World Keratoconus Day, and European Researchers' Night. I am also a peer reviewer for several respectable journals (e.g., Acta Biomaterialia, Current Eye Research, and Small).
