Sagara Jayasinghe is a practicing architect, design researcher, and heritage documentalist specializing in architectural history, transcultural heritage, colonialism, and the spatial practices of diverse religious and cultural communities. Bridging critical scholarship with conservation practice, his work focuses on the documentation, analysis, and interpretation of colonial-era monuments and artistic legacies, particularly in postcolonial Sri Lanka. Sagara earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Architecture from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He joined the academic staff of the University of Moratuwa in 2005. After two decades of practice and teaching, he pursued his PhD specializing in Art History, Heritage, and Restoration at the University of Lisbon, supported by a research grant from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). His professional and academic achievements have been widely recognized. Sagara received the prestigious 'Young Architect of the Year Award' in 2009 and has been honored multiple times with the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects' Architectural Research and Publication Award (2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021). He has served on numerous SLIA boards, juries, and editorial committees, notably as Chair of the Board of Architectural Publications (2021–2023). Sagara is currently the Vice President of ICOMOS Sri Lanka and serves as an Expert Member of two international scientific committees under ICOMOS International: Places of Religion and Ritual, and Shared Built Heritage. He has also completed advanced training on World Heritage Impact Assessments through WHITRAP Shanghai and ICCROM Rome. He has shared his research globally through academic conferences, lectures, and curated exhibitions. His international engagements include presentations at the ARCASIA Design Analysis Forum (Ayutthaya, 2015), Integrated Design Conference (Bath, 2016), REHAB (Braga, 2017), Colloque of L'Asie Portugaise (Sorbonne, 2017), NRV School of Architecture (Bangalore, 2019), Goa College of Architecture (2019), and ARTIS - University of Lisbon (2019, 2022, and 2024). He curated landmark exhibitions, such as "Cultural Mosaic: 19th-Century Tamil Christian Art and Architecture in Northern Sri Lanka" (Jaffna, 2024; Lisbon, 2025) and "Crossroads of Faith: Dutch Ecclesiastical Heritage of Sri Lanka" (Galle, 2024). Both exhibitions were supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., within the scope of the ARTIS-IHA Base Funding project. Sagara's scholarship highlights the complex interconnections between religion, architecture, and colonialism. His 2014 monograph, 'The Black Prince's Chapel: The Church Built by a Sinhalese Prince in Portugal,' produced under a scholarship program of Fundação Oriente, explores an extraordinary 16th-century church in Lisbon and its ties to early modern Sri Lankan-Portuguese diplomacy and cultural exchange. He is also the author of influential chapters in edited volumes that investigate missionary architecture and transcultural heritage. In 'Beauty, Devotion, and Spirituality: The Art and Culture of the Oratorians of Saint Philip Neri' (Brill, 2024), he offers a typological analysis of Goan Oratorian churches in Sri Lanka. His chapter in 'Regenerating Cultural Religious Heritage' (Springer, 2022), titled "In Search of a Vanishing Heritage", documents efforts to safeguard fragile ecclesiastical sites in the wake of civil conflict and displacement. As Principal Investigator of the project "Oratorians in Ceylon," conducted in partnership with the ARTIS - Institute of Art History at the University of Lisbon and funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Sagara led a comprehensive survey of Goan Oratorian churches across Sri Lanka. This included the publication of a Tamil-language booklet titled Architectural Heritage of Oratorian Missionary Churches in Sri Lanka (2021), aimed at empowering local communities and clergy with tools for heritage awareness and advocacy
