Graduated in Biology by the University of Coimbra (2002), she started her research in the field of Neuroscience in 2003,by joining Ana Luísa Carvalho Group (CNC, Univ. Coimbra), studying synaptic plasticity and glutamate receptors physiology. She concluded her PhD in Cell Biology- Neurosciences at the University of Coimbra (2011), under the supervision of Carlos Duarte, exploring the molecular mechanisms associated to excitotoxicity in the context of stroke pathology.Particularly, she unraveled how vesicular transporters (VGAT and VGLUTs) are affected by ischemic conditions, impactint on excitotoxic neuronal death. This work produced 2 relevant articles: a paper as 1st author (Neurobiology of Disease, 2011), and a paper as 2nd author (Journal of Neuroscience,2011-Journal cover; awarded Best Article by the Portuguese Society for Neurosciences). She joined Teresa Summavielle lab at IBMC in 2011, to the currently named Addiction Biology group, working in several projects within the group, particularly regarding neuroprotective effects of acetyl-L-carnitine, and behavioral and neurochemical effects of ketamine. Presently, Lobo A. is a researcher at the Addiction Biology group at I3S, focusing her research in investigating neuronal remodeling and synaptic plasticity mechanisms under psychostimulant drugs. From this work she has a working paper as 1st author, regarding acute effects of psychostimulants exposure in hippocampal neuronal remodeling and synaptic plasticity, in-vitro and in-vivo. This work has been selected for several oral communications, particularly 2 selected talks in prestigious conferences: the international conference in the addiction field in Europe- Lisbon Addictions 2019, and the national conference of the Portuguese Society for Neurosciences 2019. Lobo A. has participated in over 10 research projects (4 in the last 5 years), focusing mainly on synaptic plasticity and neuronal remodeling in physiological and pathological conditions. She is currently co-supervisor of a PhD student, and has sucessfully supervised 2 master students, and 3 undergraduated students (LSc/BSc), and co-supervised 2 master students. She also carries out teaching activities as invited professor 2 PhD programs (Master/ Doctoral Programme in Neurosciences; and Graduated Program in Areas of Basic and Applied Biology- GABBA, Univ. Porto). Lobo A. is currently (February 2021) the author of 6 publications in quality top journals (IF above 4), namely Neurobiol Disease, J Neuroscience, Brain Commun. (3 as 1st author/shared 1st author) and 2 book chapters. Lobo A. has 2 maternity leaves (2015 and 2017). She has several collaborations with national and international researchers with expertise in synaptic plasticity and addiction models.

In this interview I explained the main discoveries of the paper, briefly the role of megalin and TTR in synaptic plasticity and in learning/memory functions, and the molecular pathways that underlie those physiological roles, and how this contributes to understand the cognitive deficits associated to megalin-related pathologies.
