Manuela M. Moreira (MM) has a PhD in Sustainable Chemistry (2013) from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (Portugal). Between November 2013 to June 2014 was a Post-Doc researcher from Food Science project (NORTE-07-0124-FEDER-000069) at REQUIMTE/Faculty of Science, University of Porto. In July 2014 moved to REQUIMTE- Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) and until October 2018 was a FCT Post-Doc researcher (SFRH/BPD/97049/2013) with project titled "Valorization of Wastes from Fruit Industry". After, she obtained a Junior research contract under Norma transitória DL 57/2016 from November 2018 until May 2019. From June 2019 until now, she has a Junior research CEEC granted by FCT (CEECIND/02702/2017) in agrarian science area at REQUIMTE/LAQV-ISEP, Polytechnic University of Porto (Portugal) with project title "Valorization of agro-food wastes: A sustainable approach to obtain functional products". Recently, MM was granted by FCT with a Auxiliary research CEEC. She develops her research activities in "Grupo de Reação e Análises Químicas" (GRAQ, www.graq.isep.ipp.pt), a sub-group of the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV) of the Network of Chemistry and Technology (REQUIMTE) located on ISEP campus. Since 2007 until now, her main scientific work field is agrarian sciences namely in the sustainable valorization of agro-food wastes. Her research is addressed to the development of environmentally friendly techniques for extracting bioactive compounds from different by-products, as well as the development of value-added products from by-products and subsequent application in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Recently, she has also been working in biochars production from agroforestry wastes for application in contaminants adsorption for wastewater treatments, replacing the use of commercial activated carbon, as well as a sustainable remediation strategy for burnet soils. She participated/participates as a researcher in 3 international project and 5 national R&D projects, all funded through competitive calls. She is/was the (co)supervisor of 2 PhD (one at ISEP and other at Odisee University), 10 MSc thesis, 15 BSc students (11 from ERASMUS program) and 9 Propicie students and participated in 5 MSc and 4 BSc examination panels. Her publication record contains 64 articles & reviews published in Web of Science-indexed journals, 1 book, 4 book chapters, and 16 proceedings papers. She was also the (co)author of almost 100 communications presented in international and national conferences. She organized more than 17 events, including several workshops, seminars, and national conferences. Her work has been recognized by experts in the field, being awarded with 4 prizes for best communications and 2 paper selected by call notice from IACOBUS papers. MM was also appointed as reviewer for international scientific journals in areas related to byproducts valorization, extraction, and bioactive extracts characterization. In fact, in 2021 was invited to run the special issue "Advances in the Valorization of Food Waste for Novel Products" in Foods journal (IF 5.561). She was also actively involved in several science dissemination activities as "Ciência Viva" program (2017 to 2019), the "Introductory course on scientific research" organized by ISEP-IPP (2023) and others related with the commemorations of international year of periodic table (2019). She also was as invited speaker at 3 international events giving her the opportunity to share her achievements. MM have dedicated great efforts to bringing together a cohesive and interdisciplinary community, establishing collaborations with industries (Sogrape, AVIPE, InnovCat and Ibero Massa Florestal) and academia (FCUP, Polytechnic Institutes of Viana do Castelo and Bragança, Universities of Vigo, Odisee, S. Paulo and Novi Sad), to successfully implement strategies for byproducts valorization in her host institution (REQUIMTE/LAQV-ISEP, IPP).
