Susana Santos Lopes completed her PhD in Biology and Biochemistry in 2003 by the University of Bath. Previously she did a MSc in Applied fish biology in 1997 by the University of Plymouth School of Biological Sciences and a Licenciatura in Marine Biology in 1995 by University of Algarve in Portugal. She is an invited PI scientist at iMM since February 2023 and Principal Investigator of the Cilia regulation and disease lab at NOVA Medical School of Lisbon . Published 38 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Has 2 section(s) of books. Organized 5 scientific events. Supervised 7 PhD theses and 15 MSc dissertation(s). Participated as Principal investigator in 4 project(s). Works in the area(s) of Medical and Health Sciences with emphasis on Basic Medicine and on Biological Sciences with emphasis on Developmental Biology. In her professional activities interacted with 216 collaborator(s) co-authorship of scientific papers. In her curriculum Ciência Vitae the most frequent terms in the context of scientific output are: motile cilia diseases; primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD); fluid flow; zebrafish; nodal signaling; notch signaling; left-right organizer; lateral plate mesoderm; rare diseases. Lopes lab has a strong expertise in motile cilia biology using zebrafish as a model organism of disease. Her studies highlight the causality of flow dynamics in establishing LR axis. Lopes was part of the Management Committee for the COST Beat-PCD-BM1407 (2014-2019), via which her team learned and implemented the required diagnostic techniques according to the European guidelines for PCD. Together with clinicians Lopes triggered the implementation of a Lisbon PCD diagnostic service in 2014 providing a robust multidisciplinary diagnostic service. Currently, Lopes lab runs the only PCD diagnostic service in Portugal and is a supporting member of ERN-LUNG- PCD-core group. From 2018-2022, she was co-PI of a Twinning project named Lysocil, focused on Lysosomal storage disorders and ciliopathies. Currently, Lopes has a sponsoring grant by the German biotechnology company Ethris to test mRNA therapies in zebrafish cilia motility restoration. Ethris’ proprietary Stabilized Non-Immunogenic mRNA (SNIM® RNA) platform is a leader for replacement therapies using a proprietary lipidoid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation platform. Lopes lab generates zebrafish mutants for PCD tailored mutations and tests Ethris therapies in live larvae providing a valuable proof of principle in a vertebrate highly trackable animal model.
