Guilherme is a theoretical particle physicist, Principal Researcher at Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (LIP) since 2016, tenured Associate Professor at the Physics Department of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) since 2018, and Visiting Scientist at CERN. He holds a Licenciatura (5-year) in Technological Engineering Physics from IST (1997) and a DPhil in Theoretical Physics from the University of Oxford (2002). He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; and subsequently held various research positions of increasing seniority at CENTRA-IST. Guilherme joined LIP in 2016 where he founded the Phenomenology Group which he led until 2023. He has made key contributions to the understanding of the hot and dense regimes of QCD, notably on non-linear effects in QCD evolution and jet physics in heavy ion collisions. His current research on theoretical and phenomenological aspects of QCD emphasises procedures – including large scale computer simulations, and Machine Learning – that augment the extraction of physical knowledge from experimental data. Guilherme collaborates with theorists and experimentalists at CERN, Oxford, MIT, LNBL, BNL, Nikhef, Lund, Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela. He has delivered, on a regular basis, invited plenary talks at all leading conferences in the field. Guilherme has taught at the University of Oxford, at Universidade do Algarve, and since 2005 at IST where he has been responsible for a wide range of undergraduate, Masters’ and PhD courses. He has also lectured at several International Doctoral Schools. At IST, he served as Coordinator of the Doctoral Programmes in Physics and in Engineering Physics (2021-2). Internationally, he has served in governance roles in the THOR Cost Action and the STRONG-2020 Integrating Activity. He has been PI of funded projects since 2008, and is a co-beneficiary of the YoctoLHC ERC Advanced Grant and Working Package spokesperson in STRONG-2020.
