Marinho Lopes holds a B.Sc. degree in Physical Engineering (2008) and a M.Sc. in Physics (2010) both from the University of Aveiro. He then pursued a PhD in theoretical neuroscience and statistical physics under the supervision of Prof. Alexander Goltsev (MAP-fis programme, at the University of Aveiro, funded by FCT). The PhD project aimed to understand phase transitions, bifurcations, critical and nonlinear phenomena in neuronal network models. By the end of his PhD (2014-12-01), Marinho had published 2 peer-reviewed articles in PRE, and 4 conference papers. He had also lectured laboratory classes of two undergraduate courses. After the PhD, Marinho had a three-month fellowship funded by I3N (until the end of March 2015), where he was co-supervisor of a master student on a project about synchronisation phenomena in different network topologies. This work was published in PRE in 2016. On April 1st, 2015, Marinho joined the group of Prof. John Terry at the University of Exeter (UK), as a Research Fellow funded by a grant from the Medical Research Council (UK). There he worked with experienced applied mathematicians in the field of epilepsy with strong collaborations with clinical neurologists. The aim was to integrate modelling and clinical data to better understand and potentially diagnose and treat epilepsy. He was subsequently hired by Prof. John Terry as a Research Fellow funded by Epilepsy Research UK to develop computer models for the diagnosis and prognosis of focal epilepsies (from 2018-10-22 to 2019-05-31). Throughout these two fellowships, Marinho published 8 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as PLoS Comp Biol, Sci Rep, Front in Neurol, Front in Comp Neurosci, and PRE. He also lectured tutorial classes of Mathematics and Computing: Integrative Tools for Natural Sciences (2015/2016). He also became co-supervisor of a PhD student, funded by FCT and based at INESC TEC (2018-2022). From June 1st, 2019 to January 31st, 2020, Marinho worked with Prof. Naoki Masuda at the University of Bristol (UK) on a GW4 Alliance funded project. During this short fellowship, Marinho developed new methods to understand dynamic brain networks (paper published in EJN). Marinho was then awarded a Wellcome Trust fellowship (~£90k, PI) to investigate epilepsy surgery at Cardiff University (UK). He started this fellowship on February 3rd, 2020 and is currently working in collaboration with researchers and clinicians at Cardiff University, the University of Bristol, the University of Exeter, and King's College London. Marinho has published a total of 15 peer-reviewed articles (+1 currently under review), 13 of which as first author (one of them as equal first author contribution). His publications have been cited >160 times (see Google scholar). He has participated in 4 projects (from FCT, Medical Research Council, Epilepsy Research UK, and GW4 Alliance). He has also organised a one-day workshop, a mini-symposium at a conference, co-organised an international conference (ICTALS2019), and co-organised a series of workshops (2020). He has also participated in 35 conferences/workshops, where he has presented 21 posters and 11 oral presentations. He has also given 4 invited talks. He has supervised 5 students, both undergraduate and PhD. He is journal referee for seven journals (including Epilepsia, PLoS Comp Bio, Sci Rep, and NeuroImage), and invited reviewer for UK Res. Innovat. funding schemes. Marinho has received 13 awards/ distinctions. In his spare time, he does science outreach. He has published over 140 science popularisation articles. In 2018, he published a science popularisation book. Fields of research: theoretical neuroscience; applied mathematics; statistical physics; data analysis Keywords: network theory; dynamical systems; epilepsy surgery; epilepsy; data analysis; EEG; MRI; brain activity; brain imaging; mathematical modelling; phase transitions; nonlinear phenomena; neuronal networks; synaptic plasticity; synchronisation
