Heroen Verbruggen holds a PhD in Biology from Ghent University (2005). He is Associate Professor at The University of Melbourne (Australia). His laboratory has very strong expertise in algal genomics and algal evolutionary biology. In addition, the lab has a strong research portfolio in microbial symbiosis, using the coral holobiont as a model. Bioinformatics is a core skill in the laboratory that is applied across the range of topics the lab works on. Verbruggen has authored 157 publications, the great majority of which are papers in peer-reviewed journals.
