I completed my PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering in 2014. It was focused on the biotech flavors production and led to a collaboration with Prof. Nicaud from INRA. Then, I engaged in an experience outside academia. Hence, I got a Post-Doc contract at Biotempo Ltd., under the scope of the EU BachBerry project. During that time, I was responsible for developing upscaling- and downstream processes at lab and pilot scales, and for the product and by-product quantification. This experience allowed me to develop an entrepreneurial and industrial mind-set, reinforcing my capacity to successfully deal with new problems. I returned to CEB-UM in 2017, 1st as a Post-Doc fellow, dedicated to the 2-phenylethanol production with new isolated Y. lipolytica strains, and 2nd as a Contracted Researcher in the FoSynbio project, focusing on SynBio approaches to genetically modify Z. mobilis to produce prebiotics from agro-industrial wastes. Although I continued at CEB, I moved to a new research group in this 2nd project. During this period, I was awarded a IACOBUS grant consisting of a 2-week internship at UVigo, where I used SSF at bioreactor scale to produce flavors. Also, I participated in a Bilateral Cooperation Portugal-Hungary, that led to the collaboration with Dr. Quang, Szent Istvan University. The FoSynbio project has definitely been a very enlightening experience, enabling me to learn many new skills and grow a lot as a scientist. Besides, this position has given me the opportunity to share my previous knowledge in bioprocess engineering, with the mentoring of PhD and MScs students, in tasks related with microbiological anti-adhesive/anti-bacterial tests and optimization of fermentation processes with bacteria and yeast. This resulted in several high-impact publications. In 2022, contracted by CITEVE, I was responsible for the scale-up (pre-pilot scale) of a fermentation process to produce bioethanol from hydrolyzed waste textile for the company Re-Fresh Global (IL). In March 2023, I became an Auxiliary Researcher in the BE@T project, I was responsible for developing and optimizing biobased processes to produce biosurfactants from waste/residues and recovering them to be applied in the textile and clothing industry. Following this, I worked at SilicoLife SA as a Senior Bioprocess Engineer. Currently, I am a Researcher in the Chemistry and Biotechnology Department at the Centro Tecnológico das Indústrias Têxtil e do Vestuário de Portugal, where I focus on process optimization to produce new bioproducts for textile applications.
