Edna Rita de Freitas da Costa Correia

I am a biologist passionate about animal ecology and biodiversity conservation. My research has been focused on the trophic ecology of bird communities, as a key to understand ecosystem functioning, mostly in coastal wetlands in Europe and West Africa. I have been dedicated to investigate the diet and behaviour of birds, by using a variety of methods including DNA metabarcoding (diet) and tracking bird movements with GPS devices (behaviour). More recently I have been studying the connectivity of aquatic birds between natural and artificial habitats. I have been involved in several international scientific projects in West Africa (Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania and São Tomé and Príncipe) where I worked in collaboration with local organizations and communities. I am an enthusiastic birdwatcher and accredited bird ringer with wide experience in capturing and handling wild birds as well as tagging several bird species with GPS/GLS devices. I am also accredited to perform procedures on animals for scientific purposes. In 2022 I was awarded the L'Oréal Portugal Honor Medal for Women in Science, granted by FCT, the L'Oréal Portugal and the National Commission of UNESCO. Since then, I have been committed with the gender equality in science agenda, namely by participating in the campaign "Women in STEM" lead by GÉANT through FCCN/FCT and the book ¿Women in Science¿ lead by Ciência Viva. I am also deeply dedicated to programs of advanced training and capacity building but also to projects of scientific dissemination. My supervision/lecturing experience includes participation in programs of training and capacity building (both in West Africa and Portugal), and I am currently the principal supervisor of two MSc students (Univ. Lisbon and Univ. Minho). I am also an enthusiastic volunteer in projects which aim to promote the access of children to science. I am committed to endure in a researcher career as proven by my ability to lead projects and by my data analysis and writing skills. I am also an enthusiastic swimmer, highly skilled at persisting during fieldwork even in the most remote locations.
