Miguel Xavier obtained his PhD from the University of Southampton (UoS) in 2018, as one of the 15 fellows recruited by the MSCA ITN LAPASO project (grant agreement no. 607350). The project brought together world-leading experts in microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip, and single cell sorting and analysis from top European academic and industrial institutions. This network created valuable collaborations that remain highly active today. Miguel's PhD was multidisciplinary and focused on the development of new microfluidic tools for label-free enrichment and characterisation of primary human bone marrow stem cells. The work resulted in the publication of 3 original research papers as first author, a review and, in 2017, MX was awarded the Gold Medal for Engineering as a Young Researcher at the STEM for Britain competition. He has also disseminated his research to the general public in science outreach events and in multiple international conferences where he has won awards for best poster and oral presentations. MX remains a Visiting Academic at the UoS under the invitation of Professor Richard Oreffo (H-index 92). In late 2018, MX was invited to join the INL to work on microfluidic applications to Life Sciences. At the INL, he founded the Microfluidics hub community and was appointed as one of the managers of the tissue culture and microfluidics labs. MX has continuously been involved in teaching, first as a demonstrator in practical classes at the UoS and as the supervisor of PhD, MSc and project students at INL. MX has also been able to secure his own funding through national, international and European funding agencies, including being awarded an MSCA Individual Fellowship in 2020 to execute the GASTRIC project (grant agreement no. 101003440). Thus far, Miguel has been involved in securing projects attracting nearly 2M€. His current h-index is 9 from 14 publications (9 as first author and two as last author) and one book chapter. Miguel's professional ambition is to become an independent researcher in the field of microfluidics applied to the life sciences, hoping to drive the development of innovative applications with a direct impact in people's quality of life.
