Joana Pestana (1986) is an independent designer, an invited lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Art of the University of Porto (FBAUP) and a PhD candidate in the joint programme in Digital Media offered by the University of Porto, the New University of Lisbon and Instituto Superior Técnico. Her PhD is currently funded by LARSyS (Laboratory for Robotics and Engineering Systems Interactive Technologies Institute) research project Blockchain. She holds a BA in Communication Design from FBAUP and an MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art, London. In her design practice, that spans more than 10 years of experience, Joana has worked across print and digital media on the development of visual identities, websites, exhibition and editorial design projects for cultural and educational institutions such as London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, Galeria Municipal do Porto, MAAT, Yale University Press, amongst others. She has been invited both by faculty and students to present her portfolio and to do communications at universities (i.e. ESAD Matosinhos, ESAP, ESMAD, ETIC, FBAUP, Universidade do Algarve), to exhibit projects and deliver workshops at design festivals (London Design Festival, Helsinki Design Week, INTL International, Dubai Design Week, European Design Awards, Porto Design Biennale) and to share her position on design and emergent technologies in design media channels (Intern Magazine, Sumo Podcast, Publico). Since 2009 she has contributed to BA’s in art and design as a lecturer in universities both in Portugal and in the United Kingdom, namely, Kingston School of Art, Sheffield Hallam University, University of Maia, Catholic University of Porto and FBAUP. Besides her design and teaching practice, she has conducted both curatorial, editorial and workshop-oriented projects on the themes of design, technology, surveillance, more-than-human and new literacies (Eady Forum, Post-Eady, Scripted.Space, Eden X, Critical GPS funded by AcrossRCA, Post-Digital funded by Reachout RCA, Leonorana #08 funded by DG-Artes, Scrolling the Arcane funded by Criatório, Omnisciência: Estratégias de Fractura e Fuga funded by CITEI-ISMAI, and a Media Practice and Education special issue).
