I am Professor of Plant Physiology at the University of Barcelona (from 1993 to the present) and ICREA Academia Professor for two consecutive periods (in 2013 and 2018). I have undertaken sabbaticals at the University of Georgia (Athens, Georgia, USA, 1988-1989.), the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA, Aleppo, Syria, 1994-1995), and the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA, Dubai, UAE, 2018), as well as other visits of more than one month to ICBA (2017), the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Balboa, Panama 1992), the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT, Ciudad Obregón, Mexico, 1993), the Institute of Plant Physiology (INFIVE, La Plata Argentina 1997, 1998, 1999), the University of Talca (Talca, Chile 2016), the Coordinating Ministry of Knowledge and Human Talent (Quito, Ecuador, 2014 and 2015), and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT, Texcoco, México, 2009, 2010, 2011) and ICBA (2017). I have taken up professional roles outside the University, specifically as a National Expert posted in the EU Directorate General for Research (Brussels) from 2000-2003 and as Principal Scientist (2006-2008) in the CIMMYT Global Maize Program (Texcoco, Mexico). My experience in coordinating research is extensive and includes Deputy Chair of the Agriculture Area at the National Agency for Research Evaluation (ANEP, Madrid, 2004-2007), coordinator of Agriculture (2016 to 2021) for the Directorate of Evaluation and Accreditation of the Andalusian Knowledge Agency (DEVA-AAC) of the Junta de Andalucía (Spain), and Vice Chair for the evaluation process of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (2017-2023). I serve as Associate Editor with The Crop Journal (2016 to present) and Field Crop Research (2021 onwards) and as a Board Member of Crop and Environment. I have been Principal Investigator on several international projects and contracts and co-author of more than 300 publications in SCI and SSCI journals, with an h index of 93 (Google Scholar) and 73 (WoS), ca. 31,000 citations (Google Scholar), and 26 doctoral theses supervised. In 2008 I was awarded with the Friendship Award of the People's Republic of China. I have contributed extensively as an evaluator for numerous international and national research evaluation agencies and on a wide range of scientific journals in the field of Crop Physiology and Agriculture. I am one of 11 researchers associated with the UB who appear on the list of the world's most influential scientists, published by Clarivate Analytics in 2022 (placed in “Cross-Field category”).
