Irma Cascão, PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of the Azores (UAz), is a contracted Junior Researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences - Okeanos, UAz. In 1998, she began her career as a Researcher at the Natural Reserve of the Sado Estuary (RNES) in the scope of the Cetacean Monitoring Project. Since 2005, she has been working at the Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group (Okeanos/IMAR - Institute of Marine Research, UAz), participated in several research projects, specializing in hydroacoustics, passive acoustic monitoring and cetaceans' bioacoustics. She has devoted herself to investigating the role of seamounts/open ocean in regulating cetacean-prey interactions, using active (scientific echosounders) and passive (hydrophones) acoustic techniques. Recently, she has focused on studying the impact of underwater noise on marine ecosystems, and simultaneously, collaborating with colleagues from the University of Algarve in the development of a noise model for the Azores to estimate and map the level of anthropogenic noise.

Objectives: tag sperm whales with multi-sensor tags to record their movements and behaviour over time, and collect concurrent active acoustic data, using a scientific echosounder Simrad EK80, and water samples for eDNA sampling to characterize the prey and oceanographic landscape to contextualize sperm whale movements and behaviour. 2008 - 2011 Chief Research Scientist/Principal Investigator (RV Arquipélago) - Spatial and temporal dynamics of micronektonic organisms in Azorean seamounts and adjacent waters. Project MARMAC II and my PhD. Objective: Characterize the vertical and horizontal distribution of the micronekton in the sound-scattering layer by conducting several active acoustic surveys, using a scientific echosounder Simrad EK500, on diverse seamounts in the Azores and in the surrounding open-waters. 2010/07/25 - 2010/07/29 Scientific crew (RV Noruega) - Characterization of Condor seamount. Project CONDOR. Objectives: characterize the biodiversity/midwater fauna at Condor seamount in the Azores and to better understand the biological and oceanographic patterns and processes that characterize this seamount. Acoustic backscatter data, using a scientific echosounder Simrad EK500, in conjunction with trawling (open 10' IKMT) were collected, as well as, oceanographic data and bottom sediments.
